I

The sunbather in the sunshine, her body
Slowly browning, as though carved out of the white
      flesh
Of many apples; and she sips strong cider
In the sun, and through her peel sweats alcohol.

II

Peeling an apple with a silver knife
In one continuous strip, he looks
As wise or wiser than anyone who peers
Round the stinking bowl of some Sherlock pipe.

It was apple-wine that disclosed fabulous deer
Their horns wet with light trotting through the trees
Wet with light that wet the Seer through
And through, called ‘maiden cider’
And ripe enough for boys, bought by the schoolboy
From Farmer Gregory and taken on his Sunday walk
With or without an Oblivon but on an empty stomach
      and
Went down so well it was a hot, erect and single eye
Wet with its juices from the maiden apples.
