(for James Merrill)

At last we have proof that can’t be doubted—
A photograph, in fact!—that Life continues
Even when it’s done and Identity endures
Unchanged through all Eternity. This photograph,
Which seems to show the silhouette of a willow
Leaf, was taken at the very instant
A spirit named Jim announced his presence
At a séance in the Ansonia Hotel.
(The medium through whom Jim spoke to us
Has asked me not to reveal his name.)
The image of the seeming leaf only approximates
Jim’s spiritual form: it is a kind of calling card
He leaves by way of saying he’s been by,
Something palpable to our solid hands
And stolid imaginations. Lovely as it is,
It shrinks to insignificance beside
The facts he’s revealed concerning the Other Side,
Which is not, as many of us may have feared,
In the present condition of Europe,
Spoiled by the crush of visitors, but a true
Aristocracy, the upper strata of which are reserved
(As Dante too has indicated) for the meritorious,
Those who can properly appreciate
The etheric equivalents of what is most precious
