First my books grew stiff
brass clasps like the books monks read.

A hush enshrouded them. They were
as stern and foreign as a cooling meteorite.

Then a steady rain came every day
for weeks, soaking them through

a window I left open, rusting
them shut. I couldn't pop them free.
