for Saul Steinberg

(Whose carved and painted
Balsa table-tops
Were sculpted drawings
Of the table-tops
They were drawn upon.)

I

The varnished, waxed, mahogany veneer of the table-top
Where he sat, unable to write truthfully of what truth was,
Shone back at him, uninvitingly showing only his own
Reflectiveness, standing for all its wide mirroring of mind.
The plain deal table in the kitchen, where the vegetables get
Chopped, stood for nothing but what was rightfully done on it, and
Thereby—how splendidly exemplary this was!—for itself.

Locke’s tabula rasa was blank only if you couldn’t see
The intricate structures of possibility—a landscape
Of openness, (imprisoned in contingency nonetheless,
Locked in the very jail of what it could ever be open to)?
A still life of quick motionlessness? a tableau vivant of
The heretical panel of The Creation of the World

On the Multiplication Table, X and Y were going
Away at it, following the biblical injunction. But
Was it truly fruitful? alas we ask, (and more and more we
Have to ask). But here is another question, set for us by
That great examiner, Late Morning: Consider that

The discussion of the nasty matter was tabled in Great
Britain, and thereupon the back benchers started to shout, some
At once and others in quick succession, very nasty things.
But on this side of the Atlantic the very same motion
Was tabled and everyone there heaved a great sigh of relief:

What did the respective tables look like? Was the British one
All of metal, or perhaps even tiled, so that whatever
Blood was involved could easily be cleaned up? Was the one in
Washington placed high up on a dusty balcony where few
People ever went, save for the night watchman, on his sad rounds?
(Be specific. Do not write on more than two sides of the page.)

He lay there at the end of things; what was it he still could see:
A table of green fields, laid out in squares with hedgerows and small
Brooks? Or was it the squares on the quilt he could make out beneath
His nose (sharp as a pin? as a pen?) stretching out sadly toward
The distant and inaccessible hills of his covered feet?
