Ava taught me how to smoke
in the woods behind our high-school dorm.
We lay back laughing in the dirt.
Smoke crowned her like a diadem.

Once she lined the shower stall
with leaves and water hissed like rain
as I washed her long black hair.
She was drunk. We were sixteen.
