I force myself on today’s bright noon. The bottle,
bedside, sweats. In our common yard,
the neighbor has hung her laundry. Blouses breathe

in the wind, daring to be body without her,
to live beyond her own daring.
Behind them too, ivy charges the fence

with a steady hand. Somewhere even farther out
wind chimes shake in small alarm.
The carpenter taunts them with a hungry saw.
