Poem of the Day
Study of Children
By Asha Futterman
did you know
that you all work for me?
I asked them as a joke
did you know
that you all work for me?
I asked them as a joke
We light up between
Earth and Venus
We must all open ourselves to the influence of Love.
We must all let its fleshless fingers caress our skin.
Castilian countryside.
Bleak with furze
And so we set out calmly into the sky,
Out over sheer space and distant waters
A sound like the sound of the sky on fire, like Armageddon
When you write something
you want it to live—
you have that obligation, to give it
These were your sighs,
your toss,
the listing yoke
This hill and the old house on it
are all we have. Two acres,
more or less—half crabby lawn,
Doctor, you say there are no haloes
around the streetlights in Paris
and what I see is an aberration
Dozens of swans and geese
launched on its tar-black surface.
Sixteen tiny jellyfish
