Poem of the Day
Study of Children
By Asha Futterman
did you know
that you all work for me?
I asked them as a joke
did you know
that you all work for me?
I asked them as a joke
I wonder if he would ever take me away
with him. I wish he was my husband instead of my customer!
You are invisible as air
and as necessary, more efficient
than a flood leveling cities,
Your body is this house,
collapsing into the seasons.
he brought in bags
filled with clicking rings
cut from the tails of arrow-headed rattlers
You are horrified.
Do you wish to understand?
Naked TV wrestlers
turn my arm through the gentle ambience of Newtonian
space.
I sit on the toilet with you.
I criticize your wardrobe when you’re looking okay
Turning climbing slowly in late spring among
black trunks of high pines
talking of our lives few white words flying
Wherever I look you are islands
a constellation of flowers breathing on the sea
deep-forested islands mountainous and fragrant
Wherever I look you are islands
a constellation of flowers breathing on the sea
deep-forested islands mountainous and fragrant
