Kim MacConnel

Kim MacConnel was born in Oklahoma City in 1946. He studied at the University of California, San Diego, where he received his BA and MFA, both with honors. MacConnel focused on reinstating domestic-scaled objects, bold colors, and portable materials as significant artistic gestures, puncturing the cerebral world of Conceptual art. Reminiscent of his home–the laid-back hedonism and outlandish visuals that characterized California–MacConnel’s work rebelled against the highly polished sophistication of Northern California artists as well as the ubiquitous extremes of the East Coast. The result was something entirely unique and unprecedented: an anarchy of form and humor that led to his well-deserved status as one of America’s most important artists, and the evolution of the modern art.
