David Hockney

David Hockney was born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford, England. His paintings and etchings explore the importance of space, whether wide panoramic expanses or the intimate close-ups of his early nudes. Hockey is widely considered to be the most important contemporary artist to come out of England, not only because of the extent of his talent, but also because his work seems to exude a sense of Englishness–the comfortable, soft colors and the often-present images of middle class English society. Hockney’s notoriety stems partially from his position as a renaissance man, experimenting in many forms including photography and set design.
