Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel, Things Fall Apart, often considered his masterpiece, is his most widely read work. A leading voice in anticolonial literature, Achebe was frank in his criticism of imperialism, both cultural and literary. His work helped pave the way for a generation of West African writers who sought to reclaim the continent’s story from its (largely exoticized) place in the Western canon.
