There is no reason why a work of art should be instantly accessible, certainly not in the terms which lie behind most people\u2019s use of the word. In my view, difficult poetry is the most democratic, because you are doing your audience the honor of supposing that they are intelligent human beings. So much of the populist poetry of today treats people as if they were fools.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Scotty Moore, who played guitar in Elvis\u2019s original band, died this week, too. Alex Abramovich writes: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/06\/30\/alex-abramovich\/mystery-train\/\" target=\"_blank\">He\u00a0started out\u00a0a country guitarist, a finger-picker in the\u00a0mode of Chet Atkins. But\u00a0slathered in echo,\u00a0that country\u00a0style translated\u00a0remarkably well to a\u00a0rockabilly\/rock and roll context, while\u00a0the context\u00a0brought something extra\u2014something ecstatic\u2014to the style<\/a> \u2026 Scotty\u00a0Moore brought something different to the table. Not quite diffidence, but a perfectly worked out sense of proportion.\u00a0Moore didn\u2019t\u00a0wail,\u00a0or break from the pack: understated on stage\u00a0and\u00a0in person, he played\u00a0to frame the frontman.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>A certain founding editor of ours would have me fired for writing this, but: fuck fireworks. They\u2019re loud, they\u2019re volatile, they do violence to the sky. If you\u2019d prefer a more peaceful Fourth, you should ditch America, catch a flight to Phnom Penh, and send some clouds into the sky instead: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/306201\/the-business-of-making-custom-clouds-in-cambodia\/\" target=\"_blank\">This isn\u2019t <em>Bubble Machine BGSP #5<\/em> by the early Filipino conceptual artist David Medalla, it\u2019s Khmer Cloud Making Service, a Phnom Penh business offering customizable foam-printing services for events<\/a> \u2026 The company offers ephemeral works for events and corporate programs. They are most frequently hired to deploy cloud art\u00a0at\u00a0the openings of new businesses \u2026 Khmer Cloud Making Service currently employs four people, working\u00a0near\u00a0Boeung Keng Kang Market.\u00a0You can rent out their services for $500 an afternoon.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Hilton Als tells the long, harrowing, ecstatic story behind\u00a0Nan Goldin\u2019s <em>The Ballad<\/em>: \u201c<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/07\/04\/nan-goldins-the-ballad-of-sexual-dependency\">The Ballad <\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/07\/04\/nan-goldins-the-ballad-of-sexual-dependency\" target=\"_blank\">was Goldin\u2019s first book and remains her best known, a benchmark for photographers who believe, as she does, in the narrative of the self, the private and public exhibition we call \u2018being.\u2019<\/a> In the hundred and twenty-seven images that make up the volume proper, we watch as relationships between men and women, men and men, women and women, and women and themselves play out in bedrooms, bars, pensiones, bordellos, automobiles, and beaches in Provincetown, Boston, New York, Berlin, and Mexico\u2014the places where Goldin, who left home at fourteen, lived as she recorded her life and the lives of her friends. The images are not explorations of the world in black-and-white, like Arbus\u2019s, or artfully composed shots, like Mann\u2019s. What interests Goldin is the random gestures and colors of the universe of sex and dreams, longing and breakups\u2014the electric reds and pinks, deep blacks and blues that are integral to <em>The Ballad<\/em>\u2019s operatic sweep.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>From the makers of dirty realism, infrarealism, surrealism, and hyperrealism, it\u2019s ultra-unrealism, China\u2019s newest school of cultural thought:\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/modern-china-is-so-crazy-it-needs-a-new-literary-genre\/\" target=\"_blank\">The first thing I should do, of course, is explain what I mean by <em>chaohuan<\/em>, which we are rendering in English as \u2018ultra-unreal.\u2019 The literal meaning of <em>chaohuan<\/em> is \u2018surpassing the unreal\u2019 or \u2018surpassing the imaginary.\u2019<\/a> It is a word that a friend and I made up about a year ago during a conversation about contemporary Chinese reality \u2026 The word \u2018ultra-unreal\u2019 is young; it\u2019s a newborn baby.
