That was the year Bunting composed <i>Briggflatts<\/i>, his magnum opus, while riding the train to and from his day job as a newspaper subeditor. Bunting started the poem not long after Tom Pickard showed up at his door and told him, \u201cI heard you were the greatest living poet.\u201d (At the time, Bunting had not published anything in thirteen years; he later said he wrote <i>Briggflatts<\/i>\u00a0\u201cto show the boy how it was done.\u201d) The result, first\u00a0published\u00a0fifty years ago, in <em>Poetry<\/em>, was, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/06\/21\/august-kleinzahler\/briggflatts-at-fifty\/\" target=\"_blank\">as August Kleinzahler has it<\/a>, \u201ca very particular Northumbrian British flowering of all that Pound and Eliot had earlier achieved in their modernist project, while at the same time more emotionally freighted, more \u2018human\u2019 than <i>The Cantos<\/i> or <i>The Waste Land<\/i>.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask my sixteen-month-old whether books ought to be devoured or digested and he\u2019ll be quick to demonstrate, locking jaws on\u00a0his favorite compendium of fire-truck photos, that he\u2019s a \u201cboth and\u201d kind of guy.\u00a0In the eighteenth century, it seems, the question was merely metaphorical: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/ideas\/is-devouring-books-a-sign-of-superficiality-in-a-reader\" target=\"_blank\">Educational manuals, essays and advice books pitted \u2018digestion\u2019 against \u2018devouring\u2019<\/a> in order to slow down the increasingly fast-paced reading habits of their modern world, realigning reading with the process of character formation. \u2018Readers may cram themselves in vain with intellectual Food \u2026 for want of digesting it by proper Reflections,\u2019 cautioned Isaac Watts in <i>The Improvement of the Mind<\/i> (1741). This distinction allowed writers to position \u2018digestive\u2019 reading as an ethical ideal, while condemning \u2018devouring\u2019 as unthoughtful and hedonistic.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I stopped watching <i>Game of Thrones<\/i> when I realized that the show existed only to supply grist for Sarah Larson\u2019s ecstatic mill. Why watch the rough draft when you can go straight to the finished <i>objet<\/i>? This week\u2019s episode <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/sarah-larson\/game-of-thrones-bastards\" target=\"_blank\">pushed her to peak form<\/a>: \u201cA snow begins to fall, and Sansa, fittingly, gets the last word with Ramsay, who\u2019s tied up in a dungeon, with the vibe of Hannibal Lecter. \u2018Hello, Sansa,\u2019 he whispers. She gives him a good cold speech and then reminds him that he hasn\u2019t fed his dogs. Ah, the old bark-and-chew. Never have I been so happy to see someone\u2019s face pounded in, then eaten off by his own dogs. Sansa watches calmly, then smiles. You\u2019ve come a long way, baby. Or she\u2019s become a monster, and so have I.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In March, the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em> held <a href=\"http:\/\/artfortomorrow.com\" target=\"_blank\">a three-day conference<\/a> in Qatar, which featured Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovic, and Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr., the newspaper\u2019s publisher and chairman. The conference addressed such themes as \u201cWhat is the civic responsibility of the collector in the digital age?\u201d and \u201cHow can true, untrammelled, artistic creativity be harnessed in the service of social and economic wellbeing?\u201d It did not, apparently, worry much about what \u201ctrue, untrammelled, artistic creativity\u201d might mean in a country that imprisoned a poet, Mohammed al-Ajami, for writing poems that criticized Qatar\u2019s autocratic emir: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blouinartinfo.com\/news\/story\/1431272\/qatar-the-shape-of-tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\">The inflammatory issues of the region\u2019s present\u2014censorship, labor rights, dynastic succession\u2014are left unaddressed in the <i>Times<\/i>\u2019s plenary sessions<\/a>. Rather, the proceedings circulate around the placid lexicon of <small>TED<\/small> Talks, platitudes of futurism veering into the apolitical and commercial.
