No, not him\u2014it\u2019s Dag Solstad. (Knausgaard is a fan.) In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6471\/the-art-of-fiction-no-230-dag-solstad\" target=\"_blank\">the Art of Fiction No. 230<\/a>, Solstad\u00a0explains\u00a0why he won\u2019t write about children and why he dislikes his reputation as a master ironist. He also reveals the key to\u00a0his productivity:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For a long time I had a system, I call it the 3-1-3 system. Three days of work. On the afternoon of the third day\u2014drinking. Then you can get as drunk as you want. On the fourth day, you rest. Then you\u2019re ready for three new days of work &#8230; It gives you a lot of work days, only one day off a week.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6477\/the-art-of-fiction-no-231-jay-mcinerney\">the Art of Fiction No. 231<\/a>, Jay McInerney explains how his first outing\u00a0in the <em>Review<\/em> morphed into the best-selling novel <em>Bright Lights, Big City<\/em>, how Raymond Carver rescued him as a writer, and the upside\u00a0of losing your job, your mother, and your wife in the space of a several\u00a0months:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I was despondent. I was an absolute mess. And I think <em>Bright Lights<\/em> would have been a less interesting and more superficial book if I hadn\u2019t had that triple catastrophe to inform me.
