We\u2019re not big on\u00a0themes here at the Review<\/em>, but\u00a0our new Summer issue<\/a>\u00a0was designed with the poolside in mind\u2014we did everything short of printing it on sunscreen-proof paper. At its center you\u2019ll find a portfolio curated by Charlotte Strick<\/a>,\u00a0an essay by\u00a0Leanne Shapton, and\u00a0a\u00a0short story by Rafil Kroll-Zaidi<\/a> all on the subject of swimmers, lifeguards, and lane etiquette.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once\u00a0you\u2019re settled on the chaise, let us introduce you to Norway\u2019s\u00a0most written-about and influential living\u00a0novelist. No, not him\u2014it\u2019s Dag Solstad. (Knausgaard is a fan.) In\u00a0the Art of Fiction No. 230<\/a>, Solstad\u00a0explains\u00a0why he won\u2019t write about children and why he dislikes his reputation as a master ironist. He also reveals the key to\u00a0his productivity:\u00a0<\/p>\n

For a long time I had a system, I call it the 3-1-3 system. Three days of work. On the afternoon of the third day\u2014drinking. Then you can get as drunk as you want. On the fourth day, you rest. Then you\u2019re ready for three new days of work … It gives you a lot of work days, only one day off a week.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
