I privately congratulated myself on the authenticity of my costume. \u201cNo, witness for the plaintiff,\u201d I said. \u201cYou?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourt reporter,\u201d said the other woman.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After loading up on coffee and quartered bagels, we all traveled another ten stories and were directed to our respective courtrooms. I was assigned to wait in a nearby office with a few other witnesses. \u201cWho are you?\u201d asked a man already sitting at a desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber thirty-six, mother of two, work in tech,\u201d I said. \u201cYou?\u201d\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m the other surgeon,\u201d said a woman. \u201cBut we just got our depositions and I\u2019m afraid I\u2019m going to forget my name or something.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we shouldn\u2019t be talking to you, because we\u2019re witnesses for the defense,\u201d said the man. \u201cI\u2019m Ted Smith, thirty-four, character witness.\u00a0What brings you here?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the attorneys is an old friend of mine. How about you guys?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, we\u2019re getting overtime,\u201d said the doctor. \u201cI\u2019m a paralegal here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work in maintenance,\u201d Ted Smith said. \u201cWe\u2019re not getting time and a half?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a long discussion of what constituted overtime and what time and a half, and the number of hours counted towards each. Also the fact that we were there at eight in the morning on a Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The doctor got up and peered into the office that served as a courtroom. \u201cThat doctor looks really young,\u201d she said. \u201cTo have been practicing thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, apparently he\u2019s eighteen,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We all studied our depositions intently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAre you scared?\u201d said the doctor.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d said Ted Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am!\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m scared of the cross-examination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s hard when it\u2019s pretend,\u201d she agreed. \u201cYou don\u2019t want to look stupid.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My palms were clammy. I reminded myself I was the CFO of a successful company, with an M.B.A.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice shoes,\u201d said the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks!\u201d I said. \u201cI was trying to find my most conservative clothes, for court.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love shoes,\u201d she said wistfully. \u201cBut I\u2019m a five, so it\u2019s hard to find them in my size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI bet you can wear vintage shoes, though,\u201d I said. \u201cThey\u2019re really small a lot of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There seemed to be some kind of break; the jurors, lawyers, and court reporter filed out. I went into an office with my attorney, who also happened to be my college boyfriend. He closed the door; next door, opposing counsel was doing the same thing. \u201cThey\u2019re going to try to hit you hard on bias,\u201d he said in a low voice. \u201cSo be prepared. You know, they may suggest you have ulterior motives for testifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I get indignant?\u201d I said. \u201cShould I be really angry? I mean, I do resent that implication.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf he\u2019s accusatory you can respond in kind, but try to go in even-keeled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGot it. Hey! The other witnesses are making overtime, or maybe time and a half. Do I get paid for this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, I\u2019m happy to do it either way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks. Don\u2019t be nervous; it\u2019ll be just like we ran through. Did you get some coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood. Headache?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I\u2019m fine, I just don\u2019t want to let you down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be fine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I get to leave after I testify?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. And it won\u2019t take long\u2014about five minutes each, plus any redirects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Someone stuck his head in. \u201cWe\u2019re just waiting on juror five,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant to go to the ladies\u2019 room and see if she\u2019s there?\u201d asked my attorney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you watch TV?\u201d the doctor asked me, when we were back in the witness room.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLove it,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my god.\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know. It\u2019s completely out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t handle it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe neither. I\u2019m obsessed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou mark my words,\u201d she said intensely. \u201cThat midget\u2019s gonna ride a dragon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I agree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be Dany, Jon Snow, and Tyrion Lannister. On those dragons. Do you watch <em>Game of Thrones<\/em>?\u201d she asked Ted Smith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Is that the one with all the magic?
