I made it. This is your size. If it doesn\u2019t fit bring it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI live in the Bronx,\u201d the customer muttered\u2014but, cowed, she paid and slunk out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I examined the scarves. I didn\u2019t need one\u2014I was wearing my scarf, in fact, draped around my neck\u2014but I was impressed by the colors and textures, and storing the information away for future gift purposes. Maybe this violet\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNice cashmere, isn\u2019t it?\u201d said the owner, who had silently appeared besides me. \u201cThe finest in the world. You won\u2019t be able to get that in five years. But you know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I didn\u2019t,\u201d I murmured. \u201cIt\u2019s lovely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good price for cashmere,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut you know that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt seems very reasonable,\u201d I agreed cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI buy it myself, in India. You can\u2019t get that here. As you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I\u2019m just looking,\u201d I said, hoping the conspiratorial spiel\u2014or whatever it was\u2014would end.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay, I know,\u201d said the woman, smiling at me conspiratorially.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnow what?\u201d I said, with understandable blankness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re in scarves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, you mean this?\u201d I fingered the cotton scarf around my neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou make them. I see the way you touch the material. It\u2019s okay\u2014I\u2019m a designer, too. We all have to get ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m not a designer! I got this at the flea market!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay, I can tell,\u201d she said. \u201cDon\u2019t lie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not lying! I\u2019ve never made a scarf in my life! I mean, I knitted a couple, but\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d she said. \u201cI understand. It\u2019s okay. I can tell by the way you dress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let it be known that I was wearing Converse sneakers, jeans, and a green army jacket, so I guess that\u2019s the uniform of sneaky scarf designers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really don\u2019t know how to convince you, but I\u2019m honestly just looking,\u201d I said desperately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, I know\u00a0<em>that<\/em>,\u201d she said. \u201cI take it as a compliment. I knew when you put your face in the blue scarf.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was true; I had done this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou went to the softest one. You have the eye. Do you work in cashmeres?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust cottons,\u201d I heard myself saying. \u201cI\u2019m getting into block-printing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, while this was basically an enormous lie, it is true that that morning I\u2019d said to my husband, \u201cI bet I could do that,\u201d when we were looking at a really expensive lampshade. And I\u2019d even gone so far as to see if I had a potato in the kitchen. (I didn\u2019t.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor you,\u201d she said, \u201cI give a special price\u2014a designer discount.\u201d She named an accessibly low sum. \u201cYou know,\u201d she said, \u201ca good scarf is better than diamonds. And this price won\u2019t come around again. Life is short; we need beautiful things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you, but I don\u2019t need it right now,\u201d I said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always need nice things,\u201d she said positively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t deserve it, right now,\u201d I said. \u201cMaybe on my birthday.
