The nation mourns: <a href=\"http:\/\/player.listenlive.co\/31261\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Public Radio has dedicated its waves exclusively to the artist<\/a>; purple rain adorns <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/cover-story-2016-05-02\" target=\"_blank\">next week\u2019s <em>New Yorker<\/em> cover<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/sf.curbed.com\/2016\/4\/21\/11485472\/heres-sf-city-hall-illuminated-purple-in-memory-of-prince\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco lit its City Hall with the royal hue<\/a>; and MTV, which\u00a0hasn\u2019t played a music video in years, aired nothing but the late musician\u2019s work and the\u00a0movie\u00a0<i>Purple Rain\u00a0<\/i>yesterday. Said\u00a0the <em>New York Times<\/em> of the musician, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/22\/arts\/music\/prince-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\">His music was a cornucopia of ideas: triumphantly, brilliantly kaleidoscopic<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>As it turns out, Soviet production novels\u2014that humorless subgenre of yore\u2014followed a pretty basic pattern: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thepointmag.com\/2016\/criticism\/stalins-finger\" target=\"_blank\">an outsider arrives at a factory or construction site and has to figure out how to solve a morale problem or increase productivity: Ivan Alexandrovich has to supervise the building of a hydroelectric plant or Sofia Alexandrovna has to increase production at the textile mill. They are, along with Elizabethan masques and vice-presidential autobiographies, one of the most arid literary genres ever devised<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Any young person working in publishing today ought to know a little about the history of\u00a0fonts. If you, like me, feel your knowledge is lacking, I offer you a <a href=\"http:\/\/ilovetypography.com\/2016\/04\/18\/the-first-roman-fonts\/\" target=\"_blank\">not-so-brief history of roman fonts<\/a>. \u201cThe Carolingian or Caroline minuscule joined forces with antique Roman square capitals at the very beginning of the fifteenth century\u2014a conjunction willed by the great Florentine humanists; their forms first wrought in metal by two German immigrants at Subiaco and Rome, honed by a Frenchman, and consummated at the hands of Griffo of Bologna and Aldus the Venetian. A thousand years after the fall of the Roman Empire, the romans returned and reconquered<em>.<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today is the four-hundredth anniversary of Cervantes\u2019s death. Before he wrote <em>Don Quixote<\/em>, Cervantes was kidnapped by pirates and imprisoned in the Algiers for five years, a life-defining moment that influenced his writing: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/story\/20160421-when-cervantes-was-captured-by-pirates\" target=\"_blank\">I would argue that Cervantes\u2019s explicit interest in the question of madness emerges from the borderline situations he endured as a captive<\/a>, from the encounter with death that transformed him into a survivor. [It] converts him into a pioneer in the exploration of the psyche three centuries before Freud.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>You know who else passed away this week four hundred years ago? Shakespeare, that\u2019s who. To celebrate the Bard, NPR spoke with Shakespeare scholars, dramaturges, and Victorian food experts and\u00a0produced\u00a0a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/04\/21\/475128109\/snacking-in-shakespeares-time-what-theatregoers-ate-at-the-bards-plays\" target=\"_blank\">series<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/04\/20\/475000625\/cooking-with-the-bard-we-suss-out-shakespeares-forgotten-foods?utm_source=npr_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=20160421&amp;utm_campaign=Books&amp;utm_term=nprnews\" target=\"_blank\">of<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/04\/18\/474409705\/in-shakespeare-s-plays-mealtimes-were-a-recipe-for-drama\" target=\"_blank\">delightful<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/04\/19\/474716940\/50-shades-of-shakespeare-how-the-bard-used-food-as-racy-code\" target=\"_blank\">essays<\/a> on his\u00a0relation to food.\u00a0Linguistic and gastronomical insights abound: As Anne Bramley writes, \u201cWhen Hamlet huffs about the \u2018funeral baked meats\u2019 served at his mother\u2019s wedding banquet, he is chastising her for her quick remarriage, implying that she was serving leftovers from his father\u2019s recent funeral. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thesalt\/2016\/04\/20\/475000625\/cooking-with-the-bard-we-suss-out-shakespeares-forgotten-foods?utm_source=npr_newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_content=20160421&amp;utm_campaign=Books&amp;utm_term=nprnews\" target=\"_blank\">But funeral baked meats were in fact a real food, and they weren\u2019t as macabre as their name implied<\/a>\u2014though they were cooked in a \u2018coffin.\u2019 The same word was used for \u2018a coffer to keep dead people or to keep meat in,\u2019 explains Ken Albala, director\u00a0of food studies at\u00a0the University of the Pacific.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prince died yesterday, at age fifty-seven, at\u00a0his home, Paisley Park, in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
