Recently, 92Y and <em>The Paris Review<\/em> have made recordings of these interviews available at <a href=\"http:\/\/92yondemand.org\/Topic\/paris-review-series\/\">92Y\u2019s Poetry Center Online<\/a> and here at\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/92y\">The Paris Review<\/a><\/em>. Consider them deleted scenes from our Writers at Work interviews, or directors\u2019 cuts, or surprisingly lifelike radio adaptations.<\/p>\n<p>This week we\u2019ve debuted\u00a0four new recordings from the series. Today, the last of the bunch: <b>Pat Barker<\/b>, author of the Regeneration Trilogy, who\u00a0spoke\u00a0with <strong>Michael Gorra\u00a0<\/strong>on April 16, 2001. This interview was never adapted for the <em>Review<\/em>\u2019s\u00a0Writers at Work series, so what you hear has been essentially buried for the past fifteen years.\u00a0From the start, Barker discusses why she disdains being considered a \u201cgritty, working-class\u201d writer because of her hailing from Northern England, and how fiction can help readers face \u201cthe past that\u2019s not even past\u201d:\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I think one of the most important things that drives people to write, or drives people to any kind of creative activity, is a resistance to mortality. I feel that memorializing the dead is one of very important urges that drives people to write novels \u2026 so that we don\u2019t forget and so that the living are incorporated into us. The work is also, in a sense, full of ghosts \u2026 The ghosts are the representatives of the past that isn\u2019t being dealt with, that is, being left as an unfaced-up-to trauma, and that impinges on the lives of the living in a destructive way. Any ignored part of the past isn\u2019t really past at all.
