Quignard, himself an accomplished listener, aims \u201cto convey to what point music can become an object of hatred to someone who once adored it beyond measure.\u201d In his crosshairs is not so much music itself but the omnipresence of sound, which has, he argues, metastasized into a force of death more than of life. Quignard can be ponderous\u2014you can imagine him plugging his ears at a Selena Gomez concert\u2014but I can\u2019t deny the depth of his thinking, to say nothing of his gift for aphorism. (\u201cEverything is covered in blood related to sound\u201d; \u201cRhythm holds man and attaches him like a skin on a drum\u201d; \u201cConcert halls are inveterate caves whose god is time.\u201d) As a kind of lyrical discourse on how we hear, <em>The Hatred of Music<\/em> belongs on the shelf next to Hillel Schwartz\u2019s <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Making-Noise-From-Babel-Beyond\/dp\/1935408127\" target=\"_blank\">Making Noise<\/a><\/em>. The second treatise, \u201cIt So Happens that Ears Have No Eyelids,\u201d offers this: \u201cWhat is seen can be abolished by the eyelids, can be stopped by partitions or curtains, can be rendered immediately inaccessible by walls. What is heard knows neither eyelids, nor partitions, neither curtains, nor walls. Undelimitable, it is impossible to protect oneself from it \u2026 Sound rushes in. It violates.\u201d I read those words on the subway, as the train groaned into a turn and EDM bled from my neighbor\u2019s headphones. \u2014<strong>Dan Piepenbring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every winter and spring, I receive reams of garden and seed catalogues. Perusing them is, for me, akin to reading a good book and requires that I find a quiet, comfortable spot and consider each page with care. The photographs and copy vary in quality from catalogue to\u00a0catalogue\u00a0(I have my favorites), but each nevertheless brings what Katharine White calls \u201cdreams of garden glory.\u201d White became\u00a0<em>The\u00a0New Yorker<\/em>\u2019s first fiction editor in 1925;\u00a0three years later, the magazine published her first entry in the \u201cOnward and Upward in the Garden\u201d column, in which she wrote on seed and nursery catalogues, gardening books, and her own amateur attempts at floriculture. Last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nyrb.com\/products\/onward_and_upward_in_the_garden?variant=1094930709\" target=\"_blank\">New York Review Books collected her fourteen columns<\/a>. I recognize myself in much of what she writes: when, for instance, she cannot bring herself to stop acquiring plants or when she feels at once cheated and culpable for a plant\u2019s failure to thrive. Mostly, though, I enjoy the moments in which she writes appreciatively of garden life: \u201cToday I\u2019d like nothing more strenuous than to sit still and admire the huge heads of phlox that the wet season has produced in the perennial borders and watch the bees sipping nectar from the poisonous monkshood and plundering the lavender spikes of the veronicas.\u201d \u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_96775\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-96775\" class=\"wp-image-96775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/onward-and-upward_2048x2048.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/onward-and-upward_2048x2048.jpg 644w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/onward-and-upward_2048x2048-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-96775\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the cover of <i>Onward and Upward in the Garden<\/i>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In honor of National Poetry Month, I\u2019ve been reading Gregory Pardlo\u2019s Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning collection from last year,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/fourwaybooks.com\/site\/digest\/\">Digest<\/a><\/em>. While some are deeply personal, many of Pardlo\u2019s poems come from a place of observation\u2014such as the preamble to \u201cMarginalia,\u201d in which he bears witness to and absorbs (read: digests) the afternoon din in\u00a0Prospect Park. These observations\u00a0read like attempts to bridge the gap between himself and his community with language. The result is, so often, a vivid, scrambling montage of images and utterances (\u201cThis is Prospect Park,\u2009\/\u2009Brooklyn, where limbs tickle\u2009\/\u2009and jounce as if ice cubes shiver\u2009\/\u2009along the shirtsleeves of evergreens\u201d) that dissolve as soon as they materialize. And that\u2019s the point. In\u00a0<em>Digest<\/em>, belonging evades, even linguistically. In this way, \u201cMarginalia\u201d\u2014and, indeed, the rest of the collection\u2014explores the concept of the Other. We experience Pardlo\u2019s poetry as he experiences Prospect Park: \u201cIllusory,\u2009\/\u2009altogether babel-fractured, a single word\u2009\/\u2009from you might bring the verdant fun-house\u2009\/\u2009down.\u201d We can\u2019t help but harbor the sensation of some ambiguous, inexorable distance. It\u2019s from this space that\u00a0Pardlo charges us to experience his art: \u201cYou are home now, outsider, for what that\u2019s worth.\u201d\u00a0\u2014<strong>Daniel Johnson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you, like me, are suffering from P\u2013PvOJSW (Post\u2013<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fxnetworks.com\/shows\/the-people-v-oj-simpson-american-crime-story\/episodes\" target=\"_blank\">People v. O.\u2009J. Simpson<\/a> <\/em>Withdrawal) you might go back to Dominick Dunne\u2019s reports on the trial for <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, most of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/1995\/05\/dunne199505\" target=\"_blank\">which<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/1995\/07\/dunne199507\" target=\"_blank\">the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/1995\/08\/dunne199508\" target=\"_blank\">magazine<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/1995\/11\/dunne199511\" target=\"_blank\">has<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/1995\/09\/dominick-dunne-oj-simpson-trial\" target=\"_blank\">made<\/a> freely available. They\u2019re quiet marvels of empathy and scrutiny. Of special interest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/magazine\/1995\/12\/dunne199512\" target=\"_blank\">is his final dispatch<\/a>, from December 1995, soon after Simpson had been acquitted\u2014reporting on O.\u2009J.\u2019s celebration party and the vacuum that came to envelop him as his, uh, nonguilt sank in. \u201cI\u00a0questioned a friend of his on the possibility of suicide,\u201d Dunne writes. \u201cThere was a long pause. \u2018He has no life other than an afterlife,\u2019 his friend replied. \u2018It\u2019s a tougher sentence than if he\u2019d gone to prison.\u2019\u2009\u201d Nothing, not even FX\u2019s largely excellent series, better captures the odd, tentative form of unrest that gripped L.A. in the immediate aftermath of the verdict. J. acquitted; dig that nineties-era chyron.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez\u2019s underrated final book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Memories-Melancholy-Whores-Gabriel-M%C3%A1rquez\/dp\/1400095948\" target=\"_blank\">Memories of My Melancholy Whores<\/a><\/em>, is a touching novella about love and life in old age. The writing is gentle but never timid\u2014actually, it\u2019s surprisingly erotic. An unnamed journalist, on his ninetieth birthday, wakes with the sudden urge to recapture his youth, and so fills with a new desire: to sleep with a virgin. The romantic old man is no stranger to courtesan circles, but he finds, in his final foray with the oldest profession, a satisfaction that had eluded him for ninety years, and an excitement that transcends sexuality to give new color to his life.
