Lydia Davis<\/p><\/div>\n

Our Spring Revel was this Tuesday, and we have the pictures to prove it.<\/p>\n

Hundreds\u00a0convened at Cipriani 42nd Street to honor Lydia Davis<\/b>\u00a0with the Hadada Award. She received it from her high school classmate Errol Morris\u2014\u201c<\/strong>We played in the high school orchestra together,\u201d she explained, \u201cand he played the cello, and I played the violin. And I don\u2019t know how well he played the cello, but I know I didn\u2019t play the violin very well. So we were promising young musicians together.\u201d Morris\u00a0expressed a particular fondness for her essay on translating\u00a0Madame Bovary<\/em><\/a>, calling it \u201cone of my favorite things ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Davis\u2019s speech was entirely improvised\u2014or nearly entirely. She\u2019d found herself \u201cscrawling little notes in very small handwriting on a jiggling train\u201d to New York, she said. Her husband, Alan Cote, attempted some encouragement, she told the crowd: \u201c \u2018You know, Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address on the train.\u2019 And I told him, Yes, that was probably easier.\u201d<\/p>\n

John Guare\u00a0<\/strong>took the stage to award Chris Bachelder<\/strong>\u00a0the Terry Southern Prize\u00a0for Humor.\u00a0Bachelder regaled the crowd with a story of the Review<\/em>\u2019s fact-checking prowess\u2014suffice to say he\u2019ll never again forget which pole\u00a0the penguins come from. (Hint: not the North Pole.) He told us,<\/p>\n

One of the paradoxes of the writing life is that, as you gain experience, you actually have fewer paths forward, and fewer habitable stances, and one stance that I find currently habitable is a kind of grave playfulness. And that\u2019s a stance, among others, that The Paris Review<\/em> supports and has always supported. And I think you can take that from a guy wearing a suit holding a model airplane.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

David Szalay<\/strong>\u00a0received the Plimpton Prize for Fiction\u00a0from Rachel Kushner<\/strong>. \u201cHe may be new to me, and to the pages of The Paris Review<\/em>,\u201d she said, \u201cbut he\u2019s a fully developed writer, whose wisdom, skill, and precision, whose sardonic wit, all come through wonderfully, leaving no awkward seams of labor or vanity.\u201d<\/p>\n
