Recently, 92Y and <em>The Paris Review<\/em> have made recordings of these interviews available at <a href=\"http:\/\/92yondemand.org\/Topic\/paris-review-series\/\">92Y\u2019s Poetry Center Online<\/a> and here at\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/92y\">The Paris Review<\/a><\/em>. Consider them deleted scenes from our Writers at Work interviews, or directors\u2019 cuts, or surprisingly lifelike radio adaptations.<\/p>\n<p>This week we\u2019re debuting\u00a0four new recordings from the series, and first up is <strong>John le Carr\u00e9<\/strong>, who spoke to our founding editor\u00a0<strong>George Plimpton\u00a0<\/strong>back in October 1996\u2014their conversation formed the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/1250\/the-art-of-fiction-no-149-john-le-carr\" target=\"_blank\">Le Carr\u00e9\u2019s Art of Fiction interview in the magazine the next year.<\/a>\u00a0Here, he touches on his discovery of his character George Smiley, his experience with intelligence services,\u00a0and how he chose his inimitable pseudonym:\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When I began writing, I was what was politely called \u201ca foreign servant.\u201d I went to my employers and said that I\u2019d written my first novel. They read it and said they had no objections, but even if it were about butterflies, they said, I would have to choose a pseudonym. So then I went to my publisher, Victor Gollancz, who was Polish by origin, and he said, My advice to you, old fellow, is choose a good Anglo-Saxon couple of syllables. Monosyllables. He suggested something like Chunk-Smith. So as is my courteous way, I promised to be Chunk-Smith. After that, memory eludes me and the lie takes over. I was asked so many times why I chose this ridiculous name, then the writer\u2019s imagination came to my help. I saw myself riding over Battersea Bridge, on top of a bus, looking down at a tailor\u2019s shop. Funnily enough, it <em>was<\/em> a tailor\u2019s shop, because I had a terrible obsession about buying clothes in order to become a diplomat in Bonn. And it <em>was<\/em> called something of this sort\u2014<em>le Carr\u00e9<\/em>. That satisfied everybody for years. But lies don\u2019t last with age. I find a frightful compulsion towards truth these days.
