She has been the recipient of a MacDowell Fellowship, the Princess Grace Playwriting Award, the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award, and the Jane Chambers Award. A resident playwright at New Dramatists, George was also a founding member of the collective 13P (Thirteen Playwrights, Inc.), which won an Obie Award. Her play <em>The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence <\/em>was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2014. For seven years, George was the director of the Bard College satellite campus at Bayview Correctional Facility in Manhattan. She writes rigorously about love and its great sacrifices, and we are pulled to her scenes and words because she will not compromise how complicated we truly are. Conceptually rich and perfectly paced, every particle of language\u2014from a character\u2019s speech to a stage direction\u2014contributes to the vivid construction of a world. She is a lover of humans and spins with great compassion, keen observation and a grammarian\u2019s control the ridiculous and tragic ways they think and act. Her plays are characterized by extravagant theatrical conceits\u2014a talking ape; Nazis who materialize on the subway in twenty-first-century New York; a natural-language super-processing computer system that is embodied in human form\u2014yet at their heart they reveal a concern for how we seek connection and the quest to be understood and known.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>From\u00a0<\/em>The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: I have to change my number.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: You don\u2019t like your number?<\/p>\n<p><em>She silences her phone, pockets it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: I like it fine. Never mind, I should shut up, you\u2019re not even listening.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON (<em>ardent<\/em>): I\u2019m listening to every word you say.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA (<em>simple<\/em>): Thanks.<\/p>\n<p><em>ELIZA pours a little Jim Beam into a plastic cup, removes a Twizzler from the bag, and holds up both. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>ELIZA (<em>continuing<\/em>): Little known fact that you can file away in your mental wheelhouse, there: Twizzlers dipped in Jim Beam makes an excellent late-night snack.<\/p>\n<p><em>WATSON grins, a little impishly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: I\u2019ll be sure to keep that in mind.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: This is how we roll now at Digital Fist, LLC. Nothing but class.<\/p>\n<p><em>ELIZA dips the Twizzler, bites the end off, sips the whiskey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>ELIZA (<em>continuing<\/em>): I\u2019d offer you some, but I know how you feel about the stuff.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: Yeah, thanks for the offer, but I\u2019m good.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA (<em>toasting him<\/em>): You\u2019re the best.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>reflects<\/em>) You know, it\u2019s not just that we <em>couldn\u2019t<\/em> have a conversation about anything that was important to me. We couldn\u2019t have a conversation about anything that was important to me, but that didn\u2019t distinguish him from ninety-eight percent of the other human beings on the planet. It\u2019s that we couldn\u2019t have a conversation and he still needed to be <em>on<\/em> me, constantly, every second of our lives. And he seemed so serene when I met him. I swear, if he could have left me alone for five minutes I might not have had to leave him alone forever.<\/p>\n<p><em>She drinks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WATSON: It sounds like that\u2019s too bad.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: It is too fucking bad. (<em>beat<\/em>) Hey, don\u2019t use that word.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: What word?<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: \u201cFucking.\u201d Strike \u201cfucking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: \u201cFucking\u201d stricken.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: I keep forgetting. I need a swear jar or something.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>drinks<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>I guess what I really resent is that I\u2019m being told that I\u2019m acting irrationally, that I\u2019m\u00a0acting irrationally, when he\u2019s the one running around like Michael Douglas in that movie. Which movie am I thinking of?<\/p>\n<p><em>WATSON searches\u2014a tiny beat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WATSON: Do you mean <em>Fatal Attraction<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: No, I mean, sort of, but what\u2019s the other one . . . ?<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: Do you mean <em>Romancing the Stone<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: No\u2014what\u2019s the one where Michael Douglas spends the entire two hours in an unrelieved seizure of violent rage?<\/p>\n<p><em>WATSON searches\u2014micropause<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>WATSON: Movies that associate \u201cMichael Douglas\u201d with \u201cviolent rage\u201d include <em>Wall Street<\/em>, <em>The War of the Roses<\/em>, <em>Basic Instinct<\/em>, and <em>Falling Down<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>ELIZA: That\u2019s the one, that\u2019s the one! Thank you. Nice work.<\/p>\n<p><em>WATSON glows brighter.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>WATSON (<em>warm<\/em>): I\u2019m so glad I could help.<\/p>\n<p><em>ELIZA drinks.
