The HBO documentary <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbo.com\/documentaries\/becoming-mike-nichols\">Becoming Mike Nichols<\/a><\/em>\u2014an eighty-minute interview conducted by his friend Jack O\u2019Brien\u2014only sharpened my regret. Nichols wasn\u2019t just one of the most important and wide-ranging directors of the last century (and half of the pioneering comedy duo Nichols &amp; May), he was a brilliant explainer of what he did. He and O\u2019Brien discuss his earliest stage productions (Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple) and the filming of <em>Who\u2019s Afraid of Virginia Woolf<\/em> and <em>The Graduate<\/em>, giving glimpses of his childhood and education and his comedy routines. I could have watched them talk for hours. \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein\u00a0<\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I spent last Wednesday evening onstage at the Strand with Dan Clowes, promoting his new book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fantagraphics.com\/patience\/\">Patience<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0but I\u2019m glad of the opportunity now to say unreservedly that\u00a0<em>Patience<\/em>\u00a0is a very good book. I\u2019ll even admit that the ending choked me up a bit. The alienation and self-loathing that typically populate Clowes\u2019s work are present here, but they are more plangently explored in this story of time travel and lost love (or, as Clowes has it, \u201ca cosmic timewarp deathtrip to the primordial infinite of everlasting love\u201d), in which Jack, our hero of sorts, is literally in a time in which he does not belong.\u00a0<em>Patience<\/em>\u00a0is a time-travel story that isn\u2019t about time travel\u2014in fact, Clowes wonderfully dispenses with the usual concerns about such narratives\u2014but is instead about commonplace horrors that threaten to dismantle hope, devotion, and happiness.\u00a0\u2014<strong>Nicole Rudick<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_95277\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-95277\" class=\"wp-image-95277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/becoming-mike-nichols-1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/becoming-mike-nichols-1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/becoming-mike-nichols-1024-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/becoming-mike-nichols-1024-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-95277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From <i>Becoming Mike Nichols<\/i><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sarah Majka\u2019s debut collection\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.graywolfpress.org\/books\/cities-ive-never-lived\">Cities I\u2019ve Never Lived In<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reads like a timeworn map, with all fourteen stories as points on a circuit through the ruins of Anne\u2019s, her narrator\u2019s, love life. Anne tells every story in retrospect, making her heart\u2019s destruction feel inevitable. In \u201cSaint Andrews Hotel,\u201d she remarks, \u201cWe fall out of love only to fall in love with a duplicate of what we\u2019ve left, never understanding that we love what we love and that it doesn\u2019t change.\u201d Majka doesn\u2019t often let Anne register hope, but there\u2019s courage here. Anne is insistent on constant motion, and there\u2019s undeniable momentum to her itinerancy: \u201cWe were both moving often during this time, as if it were the best solution to a shattered life: to move from place to place, trying to thread together, if not our marriage and our lives, then something in ourselves.\u201d The title says it all:\u00a0<em>Cities I\u2019ve Never Lived In\u00a0<\/em>is a quest for home. \u2014<strong>Daniel Johnson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his essay \u201cGoing out for a Walk,\u201d the English essayist and satirist Max Beerbohm is puzzled by his posh society\u2019s belief that there is something \u201cinherently noble\u201d about the desire to go on a walk; he crabs that \u201cAny one thus desirous feels that he has a right to impose his will on whomever he sees comfortably settled in an arm chair, reading.\u201d Beerbohm has a way with frustrating moments\u2014however inconsequential the vexation may be. If you\u2019ve ever been irked at yourself for becoming too quickly annoyed at something small\u2014a surprise invitation to drinks, say\u2014then you\u2019ll understand the curmudgeonly character Beerbohm plays in this satire, collected last year in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Prince-Minor-Writers-Selected\/dp\/1590178289\">The Prince of Minor Writers: The Selected Essays of Max Beerbohm<\/a><\/em>. \u2014<strong>Jeffery Gleaves<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given the political turbulence we\u2019ve seen this week, you may not want to read another word about one Donald J. Trump, particularly if you have a heart condition. If you <em>don\u2019t <\/em>have a heart condition, though, check out the <em>Village Voice<\/em>\u2019s profile of the Donald from 1979, when, at a mere thirty-two, he was already knee-deep in sleazy real-estate deals. The infamous layer of Teflon around him was then merely a penumbra of turpitude. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/news\/how-a-young-donald-trump-forced-his-way-from-avenue-z-to-manhattan-7380462?utm_content=buffer57535&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\">Trump won\u2019t do a deal unless there\u2019s something extra\u2014a kind of moral larceny\u2014in it<\/a>,\u201d a competitor tells the reporter, Wayne Barrett. \u201cHe\u2019s not satisfied with a profit.\u00a0<em>He has to take something more<\/em>. Otherwise, there\u2019s no thrill.\u201d Later, Barrett takes a ride in Trump\u2019s double-car-length silver chauffeured Cadillac. \u201cI really value my reputation and I don\u2019t hesitate to sue,\u201d Trump tells him. \u201cI\u2019ve sued twice for libel \u2026 I\u2019ve broken one writer. You and I\u2019ve been friends and all, but if your story damages my reputation, I want you to know I\u2019ll sue.\u201d Then he puts his smile back on\u2014\u201cbut everything\u2019ll be all right.
