As she explained at the time, the cult figure\u00a0George Leonard Herter\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2012\/12\/27\/furious-george\/\">ran a sporting-goods store in Waseca, Minnesota, by day and self-published bizarre cookbooks, travel guides, and hunting books by night<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Beeman focused on Herter\u2019s particular hatred for New York, but his bile was not confined to Gotham. Each of his many books is brimming with ill will and commentary as acid as an atomic sourball. Nothing, however, \u201ctops\u201d his \u201cmarriage guide,\u201d <em>How to Live with a Bitch<\/em>, from 1969. A few years ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.villagevoice.com\/news\/studies-in-crap-beloved-real-american-george-leonard-herter-explains-how-to-live-with-a-bitch-6665908\">Alan Scherstuhl featured it in his excellent \u201cStudies in Crap\u201d column<\/a> for the <em>Village Voice<\/em>. Herter is repulsive in his misogyny; Scherstuhl calls <em>How to Live with a Bitch<\/em> a \u201cpioneering achievement in all-American jack-assery.\u201d Just take in this sample advice, for starters:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Do not establish a nudist camp in your home but keep a natural body exposure around the house on a normal basis.
