DeFoe lives in West Virginia; he is the author, most recently, of the collection\u00a0<\/em>Weekend Update.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan. 27, 1979<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today was mixed\u2014some flurries, some sun,<br \/>Skied into woodcut snow scenes, then home,<br \/>discussed Flaubert with neighbor, the one<br \/>who admires the boldness of Emma.<\/p>\n<p>I talked with Jeanne about her Dad,<br \/>how he is contrary, yet fine.<br \/>About the hurts we have traded, some grown<br \/>raw, rubbing against their giver. \u201cDilemma,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I say. My tough guy routine makes her sad.<br \/>Too neat, she replies. Too arch, she tells me.<br \/>My wise wife. She takes the kids to the show,<br \/>and I am alone, facing the TV.<\/p>\n<p>I ease myself into evening, snug,<br \/>blunting my heart on the network news.<br \/>Iranians whirl in the streets, slug<br \/>the air, each pounding a despot.<\/p>\n<p>A plane is skyjacked over Winslow,<br \/>Rockefeller died in harness, near broke<br \/>farmers herd their John Deeres toward D.C.<br \/>I turn to the window. Exhaust smoke<\/p>\n<p>blooms from a passing car. This morning<br \/>from the hills I saw my town, plain, sane,<br \/>heard the tolling of the courthouse clock.<br \/>This night a deer stands in my ski tracks,<\/p>\n<p>rigid at the baying wild dog pack.<br \/>The house creaks, I test the doors, the locks.<br \/>When it comes, it comes without warning.<br \/>Nearby a neighbor is beating his child.<\/p>\n<p>Those city dogs close, prolong their game,<br \/>slashing crudely. The deer\u2019s eyes roll wild\u2014<br \/>dogs hang from his throat, chew at his spine.<br \/>The child is creaming. The deer is falling<\/p>\n<p>My life coils behind my chair.
