The former received a rave review of his debut, <em>What Belongs to You<\/em>, in the<em>\u00a0New York Times<\/em>: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/20\/books\/review-what-belongs-to-you-a-story-of-desire-and-outcomes.html\" target=\"_blank\">Greenwell writes long sentences, pinned at the joints by semicolons, that push forward like confidently searching vines. There\u2019s suppleness and mastery in his voice. He seems to have an inborn ability to cast a spell<\/a>.\u201d And the latter has been nominated for <a href=\"http:\/\/bookcritics.org\/blog\/archive\/nbcc-awards-finalists-balakian-sandrof-john-leonard-award-winners\" target=\"_blank\">a National Book Critics Circle Award<\/a> for her novel <em>Eileen<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>In the 1840s, before photomechanical printing processes came along, illustrated books were adorned by hand with \u201creal\u201d photographs. \u201cPhotography incubabula,\u201d as such projects are known, were time-consuming to produce, requiring a complicated development process and elaborate pasting. You can have a look at some of them in the Getty, whose photography incubabula collection \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/267866\/the-hand-mounted-photographs-that-illustrated-19th-century-books\/\" target=\"_blank\">spans a vast array\u00a0of topics<\/a>, from a 1878 publication filled with beautiful microscopic images of\u00a0plant anatomy\u00a0to an\u00a0exceptionally rare 1844 edition of H. Fox Talbot\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Pencil of Nature<\/em>\u2014considered the first commercially published\u00a0book illustrated with photographs showing the potential of the medium.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Is a young person in your life beginning the college application process? Tell her not to apply to Tolstoy College\u2014yes, it has a prestigious name, but it\u2019s been closed since the eighties. When it was open, though, what a place it was! As Jennifer Wilson tells it, the college, based in Buffalo, was an anarchist paradise: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-unlikely-history-of-tolstoy-college\" target=\"_blank\">the college tried to model equal and shared governance and collective decision-making in the running of the school as well. Initially, there was no official policy on grading<\/a>, but the administration stepped in and imposed limits on the number of A\u2019s that could be given out in a class. Professors then let students decide collectively who would get which grades, using the Marxist rubric of \u2018each according to his ability, each according to his need.\u2019 In practice, this meant that one student might say, \u2018I need the A; I\u2019m going to law school,\u2019 in the hope of convincing other students that he was truly needy. Faculty salaries were collectively determined, too, and based on the respective household expenses of each staff member.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paul Lisicky on Flannery O\u2019Connor\u2019s story \u201cRevelation\u201d and the torrent of disgraces she rains on her characters: \u201cPeople, no matter how inert they seem to be, contain the capacity to surprise us, to change \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2016\/01\/by-heart-paul-lisicky-flannery-oconnor\/424632\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yes, O\u2019Connor destroys some of her characters\u2014subjects them to humiliation, degradation, violence. But maybe that\u2019s because she understands human stubbornness<\/a>, how we cling to our limitations until events of great force alter us \u2026 A narrative, when it\u2019s really alive, will always disturb you when you\u2019re there to seek comfort, and sing in two contrary voices when you just want to hear a single, pure melody.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Turning off your cell phone for a little \u201coff-the-grid\u201d time is a voguish way to announce your awareness of technology\u2019s ills\u2014but is it a mental-health exercise or just another signal of privilege? \u201cThe next big fashionable purging movement looks set to be the Wi-Fi detox; a bit like colonic irrigation for the mind, flushing out all the unnecessary gunge \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/jan\/15\/living-offline-status-symbol-eddie-redmayne\" target=\"_blank\">What better proof that you\u2019re just too cool and creative to be \u2018on\u2019 all the time; that you need to be free to think great thoughts?<\/a> \u2026 Going off grid is all about suggesting you\u2019re so hotly in demand that you need\u00a0to stand back from the craziness\u2014but also crucially that you can afford to do so.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations to Review contributors Garth Greenwell and Ottessa Moshfegh.
