But we needn\u2019t worry. The Forbes Pigment Collection, presently housed at the Harvard Art Museums, is dedicated to preserving historic colors. \u201cLater Forbes hired scientist Rutherford John Gettens, who examined the chemistry of pigments and innovated tools like a microsampler for taking art specimens. Now <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/162532\/the-pigment-library-that-launched-american-art-conservation\/\" target=\"_blank\">conservators can\u00a0examine how a color has changed over time\u2014like pararealgar, that was originally red and reacted with light into yellow\u2014and the original components of art through the pigment library<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>So your home was featured in a popular motion picture! That\u2019s swell. That\u2019s just grand. I\u2019d be happy to stop by and have a look, because, you know, I\u2019m in the market for a\u2014oh, oh it was in <em>Silence of the Lambs<\/em>, you say? I see. And nearby, \u201cthere\u2019s a creepy-looking tunnel, which some visitors suspect is haunted. There\u2019s an old, rusty bridge that crosses the Youghiogheny River and serves as the main access route to the nearby town of Perryopolis. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/01\/13\/movies\/silence-of-the-lambs-house-cant-find-a-buyer.html?smid=tw-nytimesarts&amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\">The isolated location is perhaps the perfect place for a fictional killer to set up shop<\/a>\u201d? Well, let me think on it. I\u2019ll get back to you sometime.<\/li>\n<li>In the 1930s, a Wyoming newspaperman named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/daily\/2016\/01\/12\/girls-and-indians-garrett-price-white-boy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garrett Price started to draw <em>White Boy<\/em>, a comic about, yes, a young white male who was captured by Indians and adopted into their tribe<\/a>. (The strip later took the slightly less inadvisable title <em>Skull Valley<\/em>.) Now, the entire three-year run of <em>White Boy <\/em>has been reissued and it is \u2026 let\u2019s say it\u2019s illuminating as to the predilections and prejudices of its era. \u201cPrice\u2019s character Trapper Dan Brown was a familiar frontier type, with a high opinion of himself and a low opinion of Indians,\u201d Thomas Powers writes of it: \u201cIn one strip Trapper Dan challenges Lark Song, a noted orator in his tribe, to best if he can a song Dan has written. One verse goes: <em>Oh, I don\u2019t like books\u00a0<\/em>\/ <em>and I don\u2019t like tea,\u00a0<\/em>\/ <em>I wrassled a bear\u00a0<\/em>\/ <em>when I was three.\u00a0<\/em>\/\u00a0<em>Ki-Yi-Yippy-Yippy Yea.<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>A new collection of Walker Evans\u2019s photography finds him in cinemas and junkyards, subways and ice-cream shops\u2014the book shows \u201can artist who was constantly evolving; he was sampling new ideas, techniques, and technologies. Anything new or curious was of interest. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/behold\/2016\/01\/12\/the_work_of_walker_evans_is_collected_in_the_book_walker_evans_depth_of.html\">When he advised the artist to \u2018Stare, pry, listen, eavesdrop,\u2019 he was speaking from his own experience<\/a>. It could have been his personal mantra.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Patti Smith has been reading Frida Kahlo\u2019s love letters to Diego Rivera, with attention to one in particular: \u201cThey didn\u2019t have a passionate relationship that dissipated and was gone. They had an earthly human love as well as the loftiness of a revolutionary agenda and their work. The fact that this isn\u2019t a profound letter makes it in some ways more special. She addressed it to \u2018Diego, my love\u2019\u2014even though this is the most mundane, simplest correspondence, she still noted their love, their intimacy. She held the letter in her hands, she kissed it with her lips, he received it and held it in his hands. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/how-frida-kahlos-love-letter-shaped-romance-punk-poet-laureate-patti-smith-180957682\/?utm_source=twitter.com&amp;no-ist\" target=\"_blank\">This little piece of paper holds their simplicity and their intimacy, the earthiness of their life.
