Spending time with them, I realized that there\u2019s a voyeuristic pleasure in finding yourself submerged in the intimacies of a couple with a complex history<\/a>. Watching the deepest, strangest way two people communicate made me feel like an intellectual Peeping Tom\u2014one who wanted to stay \u2026 They go at it tit for tat, with the rapid-fire speed of David Mamet dialogue, but they\u2019ll linger to enjoy language more when discussing their Roadfood glory days. At times, listening to them talk, it seems that alone neither one can remember an entire story, and that together neither one can remember it the same way. There are tales about botched attempts to donate leftovers that ended in an undercover police sting, and casual references to a strange commune-like group of former Barnum &amp; Bailey performers who live in Bethel and call themselves the \u2018frog people.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>This is a public service announcement. If you, like me, were taught growing up to deploy synonyms for <em>said <\/em>whenever you wrote dialogue, please stop immediately. To stick to <em>said <\/em>is to improve the world of prose for all of us. Gabriel Roth agrees: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/lexicon_valley\/2015\/12\/02\/teachers_banning_simple_words_like_said_is_a_bad_idea.html\" target=\"_blank\">Replacing the word <em>said<\/em> with \u2018colorful\u2019 or \u2018lively\u2019 synonyms is a ubiquitous symptom of bad writing<\/a>. Individual instances are usually redundancies: \u2018I\u2019ll never cheat again!\u2019 is recognizable as a promise without \u2018he vowed\u2019 after it. But a procession of <em>she explained <\/em>and <em>he chuckled <\/em>and <em>I expostulated<\/em>\u2014the reporting verbs that clog your dialogue when you follow the \u2018never say <em>said<\/em>\u2019 rule\u2014is worse, because they force the reader\u2019s attention away from the content of the writing and onto the writer\u2019s hunt for synonyms.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNabisco. Nabisco! \/ Oreos! Right? \/ Oreos! I love Oreos! \/\/ I\u2019ll never eat them again. OK? \/ I\u2019ll never eat them again. \/\/ No \u2026 Nabisco.\u201d This poem, a masterwork of compression and a ludic comment on commodity fetishism, comes courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/dec\/02\/donald-trump-verses-bard-of-the-deal-on-sale-poetry-speeches\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump, whose speeches have been anthologized in a \u201ctreasury of oral poetry\u201d<\/a> called <em>Bard of the Deal<\/em>. Some are calling \u201cFreedom Tower,\u201d in particular, the most vital and intriguingly cross-disciplinary work of our young century: \u201cWorst pile of crap \/ Architecture \/ I\u2019ve ever seen.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Hey there, young person: Do you wish to be as successful and as verbally acrobatic as bona-fide geniuses like Trump? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/2015\/12\/gay-talese-frank-sinatra-book\" target=\"_blank\">Gay Talese has some advice for you<\/a>: \u201cI don\u2019t think this new generation has the patience or even knowledge of how to get things \u2026 You have to get off your ass. Make something happen with your personality, with your goddamn style, your charm, your beautiful clothes, your reassurance, your salesman huckster-ist licorice. Know how to get something and not break hearts or be offensive.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Before he embarked on <em>Moby-Dick<\/em>, Herman Melville paid an inspiring visit to London: \u201cLate at night, he \u2018turned flukes\u2019 down Oxford Street as if he were being followed by a great whale, and thought he saw \u2018blubber rooms\u2019 in the butcheries of the Fleet Market \u2026 Perhaps most importantly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/books\/2015\/12\/white-whale-big-smoke-how-geography-london-inspired-moby-dick\" target=\"_blank\">it was here that Melville saw the work of J M W Turner, a clear visual influence on his book-to-be<\/a>.
