Once Lyne has paid the fee,\u00a0the [censorship] board are obliged to watch it.\u201d If all goes according to plan, and assuming the censors aren\u2019t fans of Andy Warhol or <em>Modern Times Forever<\/em>, the movie will send them into a spiral of despair and boredom of a sort not seen since <em>Must Love Dogs<\/em>, ten years ago.<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re on film: Prince\u2019s <em>Purple Rain <\/em>has been remade in Niger, which is a great way to spread the Purple gospel, except that no one in Niger knows who Prince is, and they don\u2019t have a word for the color purple. \u201cThe fact there is no Tuareg word for purple means the film is saddled with the title <em>Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai<\/em>, which translates as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/nov\/24\/prince-purple-rain-remake-niger-sahel-sounds?CMP=oth_b-aplnews_d-1\">Rain the Color of Blue With a Little Red in It<\/a><\/em> \u2026 Swapping smoky Minneapolis for dusty Agadez, the largest city in the country\u2019s central region, the new film follows Mdou Moctar\u2014a popular self-taught Niger musician in real life\u2014as he rides his purple motorbike from performance to performance, struggling to make a name for himself.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The verb <em>to dream <\/em>never used to stand in for <em>to aspire<\/em>. Dreaming used to be a matter of sleep\u2014a matter of deluding yourself in slumber. For the shift, \u201cyou can blame the Americans. Our collective embrace of the so-called \u2018American dream\u2019 was the cornerstone of this particular twentieth-century shift in usage \u2026 In 1931, American historian James Truslow Adams coined the phrase \u2018The American Dream,\u2019 in his book <em>The Epic of America <\/em><em>\u2026 <\/em>Adams used the \u2018dream\u2019 as a structuring conceit for his gloss of American history, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/articles\/how-americans-changed-the-meaning-of-dream#link_time=1448390151\">describing this dream as one of material prosperity, but also of what we might now call self-actualization<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>For the journalist Jeff Sharlet, in Paris, the events of November 13 began with a kind of nervous laughter: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/bookforum.com\/review\/15285\">The point is\u2014something about the jokes we tell not just as frightened people, but as a certain kind of frightened people<\/a>. Citizens of empire or of a very rich and stylish former empire that still has an aircraft carrier, the <em>Charles de Gaulle<\/em> \u2026 these jokes, now, are different. These are not the jokes of the oppressed, they\u2019re the jokes of those of us who suddenly\u2014<em>suddenly<\/em>, so many words demand quote marks after terror\u2014find ourselves seen as the oppressors \u2026 These are the jokes we tell to hold at bay the knowledge that this isn\u2019t the first time or the last, the knowledge that they don\u2019t hate us because of our caf\u00e9s but they will attack our caf\u00e9s, the knowledge that we\u2019re fucked as soon as we find ourselves saying <em>they<\/em>, and then, worse, the knowledge that we were fucked before we began, because we\u2019ve never had any other word than <em>they<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>After 9\/11, \u201cSusan Sontag seemed tactless to many in speaking of the \u2018sanctimonious, reality-concealing rhetoric\u201d of \u201cconfidence-building and grief management\u2019 that resembled the \u2018unanimously applauded, self-congratulatory bromides of a Soviet Party Congress.\u2019 She was attacked for insisting, \u2018Let\u2019s by all means\u00a0grieve together, but let\u2019s not be stupid\u00a0together.\u2019 \u201d Fourteen years later, we\u2019ve not exactly excelled at this not-being-stupid-together business, as Pankaj Mishra points out: \u201cNot surprisingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/nplusonemag.com\/online-only\/online-only\/growing-stupid-together\/\">the pampered and intellectually neutered industry of expertise and commentary today betrays cluelessness before the spectacle of worldwide mayhem<\/a> \u2026 Only God knows how much we need some real argument and fresh thinking\u2014the tradition of self-criticism that did indeed once distinguish and enlighten the West. For as long as avid conformists and careerists reign over an impoverished public sphere, endless war will remain the default option. And the recourse to Westernism\u2019s self-congratulatory bromides after every new calamity will ensure that we continue to grieve together and grow stupid
