He also made the most sensuous blender I\u2019ve ever seen. Then there\u2019s his Lady Schick electric shavers, his enameled cookware\u2014and his gas pumps! What can be said about the man\u2019s gas pumps? Muller-Munk was an impeccable industrial designer, and a new exhibition at the Carnegie Museum aims to give him his due: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2015\/nov\/20\/man-who-shaped-tomorrow-peter-muller-munk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Muller-Munk was always attuned to the latest trends in European metalwork<\/a> \u2026 But [he] was never predictable, and moved with ease from a round, fluted silver bowl (circa 1928) akin to Josef Hoffmann\u2019s designs for the Wiener Werkst\u00e4tte, to graceful leaf-like shapes for a footed silver centerpiece (1929\u20131930) to a severely squared-off silver-plated tea service with tusk-like ivory handles (1931).\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Every week brings another successful trip to the literary lost-and-found bin. This time it\u2019s yielded <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/nov\/23\/lost-william-faulkner-play-published-for-first-time\" target=\"_blank\">Twixt Lip and Cup<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/nov\/23\/lost-william-faulkner-play-published-for-first-time\" target=\"_blank\">, an early play by a young William Faulkner, first published nearly a century ago in<\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/nov\/23\/lost-william-faulkner-play-published-for-first-time\" target=\"_blank\"> The Strand<\/a><\/em> and promptly forgotten by everyone, until Andrew Gulli rediscovered it in an archive at the University of Virginia. Dubbed a \u201clight-hearted jazz age story,\u201d the play \u201cis set in the apartment of a \u2018well-to-do bachelor,\u2019 and sees two friends of around thirty, Francis and Jim, each vying to convince the nineteen-year-old Ruth to marry them &#8230; Prohibition is under way, and the friends are enjoying an illicit drink. Ruth\u2019s drinking, however, comes under censure from Jim, who asks Francis: \u2018What are our young girls coming to these days? They every one need to be taken by a strong hand,\u2019 adding: \u2018I certainly don\u2019t approve of that child chasing all over the known world after a bottle of liquor. It\u2019s disgusting.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Last week we hosted a party at the Jane Hotel to launch <em><a href=\"http:\/\/store.theparisreview.org\/products\/the-unprofessionals-new-american-writing-from-the-paris-review\" target=\"_blank\">The Unprofessionals<\/a><\/em>, our first anthology of new writing in fifty years. The <a href=\"http:\/\/pagesix.com\/2015\/11\/19\/how-greta-gerwig-learned-about-her-stutter\/\" target=\"_blank\">gossip<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/the-porn-theme-was-hot-and-other-notes-from-a-paris-review-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">columnists<\/a> were out in force, natch\u2014by which I mean two of them attended. \u201cAn amiable guest of literary note was willing to give me the following quote, anonymously, because, as he confided, he had been expected at another gathering: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/the-porn-theme-was-hot-and-other-notes-from-a-paris-review-party\/\" target=\"_blank\">The porn theme was undeniably hot<\/a>.\u2019 He also complimented Lorin Stein\u2019s \u2018gutsiness in opening up the psychosexual landscape [which] has cleared space for some writing that wanted to get out.\u2019 I thought that was perfectly stated, complimented him on his fine gray flannel suit, and moved on into the evening.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Every writer has an audience in mind. Claire Vaye Watkins writes for that hoary, classic demographic \u2026 you know the one, surely? \u201cIt was Toni Morrison who pointed out that Tolstoy was not writing for her, who said she was writing toward black women. It makes you wonder, Who am I writing for? Who am I writing toward? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tinhouse.com\/blog\/41314\/on-pandering.html\" target=\"_blank\">Myself, I have been writing to impress old white men<\/a>. Countless decisions I\u2019ve made about what to write and how to write it have been in acquiescence to the opinions of the white male literati. Not only acquiescence but a beseeching, approval seeking, people pleasing \u2026 I wrote <em>Battleborn<\/em> for white men, toward them. If you hold the book to a certain light, you\u2019ll see it as an exercise in self-hazing, a product of working-class madness, the female strain. So, natural then that <em>Battleborn<\/em> was well-received by the white male lit establishment: it was written <em>for them<\/em>. The whole book\u2019s a pander. <em>Look<\/em>, I said with my stories: <em>I can write old men, I can write sex, I can write abortion. I can write hard, unflinching, unsentimental. I can write an old man getting a boner!<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Mary Beard\u2019s <em>SPQR<\/em>, a history of Rome, invites us \u201cnot only to \u2018meet the Romans,\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2015\/12\/the-secret-of-romes-success\/413143\/\" target=\"_blank\">but also to acknowledge that we can never really meet them and that, in many ways, we may not want to<\/a>. The problem goes beyond the limitation of our sources; it lies in the vast cultural gaps that separate us from their world, and the profoundly repellent facts of daily life in ancient Rome: slavery, filth, slaughter, illness, \u2018newborn babies thrown away on rubbish heaps.\u2019 Yet Beard finds in Rome, if not a model, at least a challenge \u2026 The ancient Romans, Beard shows, are relevant to people many centuries later who struggle with questions of power, citizenship, empire, and identity.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Muller-Munk, who died in 1967, designed a really nice chromium-plated water pitcher.
