We\u2019re trying to relive some of that Estival Enchantment\u2122 by publishing the interviews from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/back-issues\/213\" target=\"_blank\">our Summer issue<\/a> in full, online. Just think: what our print subscribers read on vacation\u2014at the beach, by the pool, in the sun\u2014you can read in that vast, indifferent, weatherless place we call the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>First there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6385\/the-art-of-translation-no-4-richard-pevear-and-larissa-volokhonsky\">the Art of Translation No. 4, with Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky<\/a>\u2014who have been married for thirty-three years and whose thirty-odd translations include\u00a0<em>The Brothers Karamazov<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Crime and Punishment<\/em>,\u00a0<em>War and Peace<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Anna Karenina<\/em>, and Chekhov\u2019s\u00a0<em>Selected Stories<\/em>. \u201cI do live in the book, in the voice or voices,\u201d Pevear explains:\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>If you don\u2019t enter into it, you can\u2019t really translate it. But there is also a certain detachment. You keep having to step back and think, How do I say that in English? Translation isn\u2019t done by principle or by a machine. The only way you can judge what you\u2019re doing is by how it feels to you. Is that the life of it? And for that there has to be a lot of identification\u2014not with the characters but with the art of the book, the art that went into it. You have to have that in order to choose your words. They have to feel right. It\u2019s impossible to define. Writers know this feeling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"attachment_91831\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/peter-cole.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91831\" class=\"wp-image-91831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/peter-cole.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/peter-cole.png 720w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/peter-cole-300x260.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-91831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cole in 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/6386\/the-art-of-translation-no-5-peter-cole\">in the Art of Translation No. 5, Peter Cole<\/a>, who translates poetry from Hebrew and Arabic, notes the difficulty in tackling the subject at all. \u201cSmart people say such dumb and disappointing things about it,\u201d he says:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Such as that, unlike so-called original composition, it\u2019s always a matter of compromise, of negotiation\u2014that translation is inevitably a failed approximation, or like a black-and-white photograph rather than color. But what in life that\u2019s valuable over time doesn\u2019t involve negotiation or intelligent compromise? Where does friendship come from? Or marriage? Education? Commerce? A culture? Would you colorize Stieglitz? And who says that original composition is fundamentally different from translation? \u201cEver tried. Ever failed. No \u00admatter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.\u201d Beckett isn\u2019t talking about translation there, he\u2019s talking about life, or writing, period. Poetry isn\u2019t lost in translation, it\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0translation. It\u2019s lost only in bad or gray translation\u2014and in the mindless repetition of the thin figures of speech we use to talk about it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019ll close with a friendly reminder that you could\u2019ve read these interviews months ago.
