Please note, then, that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/nov\/09\/k-pop-star-iu-song-sexualising-jose-mauro-de-vasconcelos-my-sweet-orange-tree?CMP=twt_books_b-gdnbooks?CMP=twt_books_b-gdnbooks\" target=\"_blank\">Korean pop legend IU stands accused of sexualizing the story of <em>My Sweet Orange Tree<\/em><\/a>, a Brazilian novel more than forty years old, which she recently adapted for her song \u201cZeze.\u201d The book concerns a kid\u2014yes, it\u2019s Zeze\u2014who gets into a lot of innocent trouble and faces corporal punishment as a consequence. But IU\u2019s lyrics tell a different tale: \u201cZeze, come on up the tree quick and kiss the leaves, don\u2019t be naughty and don\u2019t hurt the tree, come up the tree and get the youngest leaf \u2026 you are innocent but shrewd, transparent but dirty and there is no way of knowing what\u2019s living inside.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Christopher Logue was a fine poet, but I\u2019ll always wonder what might\u2019ve been if he\u2019d stayed the course as an actor: \u201cHis considerable work in theatre and film as actor, playwright and screenwriter nourished the poetry, much of which was dramatic in nature \u2026 Rather pleased with his performance as Cardinal Richelieu in Ken Russell\u2019s 1971 film <em>The Devils<\/em>, Logue boasted to the director Lindsay Anderson that he had a future as \u2018the only English poet\u2009\/\u2009film star.\u2019 To which Anderson responded, sighing: \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v37\/n21\/august-kleinzahler\/at-the-rob-tufnell-gallery\" target=\"_blank\">You will never be a star. You might become a featured player specializing in intellectual villains, artistic misfits, et cetera<\/a>.\u2019\u2009\u201d (He did, it must be said, score the role of \u201cSpaghetti-eating fanatic\u201d in Terry Gilliam\u2019s <em>Jabberwocky<\/em>, from 1977.)<\/li>\n<li>The great irony of psychoanalysts is that many of them, despite the depth of their insights into filial relations, were shitty parents. Reading their family memoirs is an illuminating experience, especially in the case of Franz Alexander, whose granddaughter Illonka has written a book about him: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/bad-freudian-fathers\" target=\"_blank\">Her grandfather declined to house her, as if, she said, he was punishing her for her mother\u2019s choices<\/a>. She wound up in a Catholic residence for girls in downtown Los Angeles. She didn\u2019t know that she had family in San Diego, Cleveland, New York, Chicago, Madison, and Dallas. No one told her. When Franz Alexander died, in 1964, two years later, Ilonka was adrift. Although she had two half-sisters, she thought of herself as an only child \u2026 The biggest lie: Franz told everyone that he didn\u2019t know where Ilonka\u2019s mother\u2019s was. He was embarrassed, Ilonka said, analyzing him.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in publishing-industry nostalgia: Remember when magazines were rolling in the dough, and when their words-to-pictures ratio was nearly one-to-one? I don\u2019t, either. But Robert Hughes does\u2014he was <em>Time<\/em>\u2019s art critic for thirty-one years, and it was, he says, good: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/culture\/2015\/11\/robert-hughes-the-spectacle-of-skill\" target=\"_blank\">Being the art critic of <em>Time<\/em> in the seventies was like enjoying a perpetual research grant from the most benign of foundations<\/a>. I could go more or less anywhere I wanted, look at anything I wished to, and be paid generously for doing it \u2026 If there was a show in Rome or Florence, Paris or Brussels, Berlin or London, or indeed practically anywhere in Europe, a show that could be argued to hold some interest for an intelligent reader and from which two, four, or six pages of splashy color could be extracted, off I would go \u2026 When I heard some power hog from the movie industry bombing on about the <em>truffes sous la cendre<\/em> he had recently demolished at Le Park 45 during the Cannes Film Festival, I would not need to wonder what they tasted like.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And today in nostalgia, full stop: Alanis Morissette\u2019s <em>Jagged Little Pill <\/em>is twenty years old, and <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/cuepoint\/jagged-little-pill-an-essay-c77a67c7daed\" target=\"_blank\">she\u2019s here to remind you<\/a>: \u201cI remember telling them, \u2018Well, if you wanted a record that sounded like Dan Steely, then maybe you should have signed someone in their thirties, rather than me, a nineteen-year-old.\u2019 This was met with silence, in typical form. My friend quickly leaned over and said, \u2018It\u2019s \u201cSteely Dan,\u201d Alanis.\u2019 Oh, jeez.
