He died in 1991.\u00a0<\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>for Clark Coolidge<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The sky is pitiless. I beg<br \/>your pardon? OK then<br \/>the sky is pitted. The yard<br \/>is sand and laced with roots<br \/>afloat on rock encasing fire.<br \/>You think so do you. No.<br \/>Yes. Don\u2019t know. Check one.<br \/>Forget all you ever knew.<br \/>Sorry. Not my romance. What<br \/>is? Sorry. We don\u2019t take<br \/>in trick questions. You mean?<br \/>I do: put down that.<br \/>Put that down too. Skies<br \/>of spit, seas where whales<br \/>piss and die to make a bar<br \/>of scented soap, uhm smells<br \/>good. She came in like an ex-<br \/>cited headline. The deer<br \/>they all were starving! To<br \/>death, even, perhaps. And<br \/>eating people! What to do<br \/>with these disordered herds<br \/>of words? I said I would<br \/>eat my words and do so, now<br \/>you see. He eats them, all<br \/>up. Greedily. Yesterday the<br \/>air was squeaky clean today<br \/>it\u2019s dull and lifeless as an<br \/>addict\u2019s armpit. Surely you<br \/>mean leafless. I have a flea<br \/>bite, here, pink, of course<br \/>as an eye disease: the cat<br \/>who brings me fleas dies<br \/>like a dog, sleepily, or<br \/>an unwatered plant. That<br \/>was exciting wasn\u2019t it. It\u2019s<br \/>not that I crave. Uh did<br \/>you say crave? Some words<br \/>are briefly worse than others:<br \/>get the Librium gun and point<br \/>it and the Kodak at that Kodiak.<br \/>You see? No hope. So don\u2019t<br \/>hope. Hop, skip, jump or<br \/>lie down. Feed your face.<br \/>Now feed the dog. He ate his.<br \/>He is eating the cat who<br \/>objects. Fix the fire. Put<br \/>out the light. An ice cold<br \/>hand slides in the window<br \/>to touch your uncovered head<br \/>forehead cheeks lips lobes<br \/>and all with worlds of fire<br \/>chilled by distance. O night.<br \/>Bedclothes loosen. Unseen twigs<br \/>erect themselves in air.
