A prolific poet, novelist, science-fiction writer, and author of children\u2019s books\u2014including <\/em>The Brave Little Toaster: A Bedtime Story for Small Appliances\u2014<em>Disch frequently published his work in the<\/em>\u00a0Review<i>.<\/i>\u00a0<em>He\u00a0died in 2008. \u2014D.P.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At first she is only mildly annoyed: the car<br \/>won\u2019t start, it\u2019s happened before. She\u2019ll phone<br \/>her husband\u2014what <em>is <\/em>his name?\u2014at his office,<br \/>and he\u2019ll come pick her up. Another cup of coffee,<br \/>meanwhile, in that funeral parlor of a living room<br \/>with old Mrs. Marbleheart, who haunts this old house.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Through the fence\u2019s iron trellises, the house<br \/>seems strangely familiar. It is her own, and the car<br \/>is parked in her own driveway. In the living room<br \/>picture window a candle gutters, and a phone<br \/>rings, alarm-clock-like, within. What a case of coffee<br \/>nerves she\u2019s got. It must be Alex, calling from the office.<\/p>\n<p>Only that and nothing more; Alex is at his office,<br \/>she\u2019s in her spotless kitchen, the house<br \/>was built yesterday, on the stovetop the glass coffee<br \/>pot burbles its ads, and a mechanic can fix the car.<br \/>His name <em>is <\/em>Alex, and it must be him on the phone.<br \/>Goodness\u2014imagine falling asleep in the living room<\/p>\n<p>sofa in mid-afternoon. But this <em>isn\u2019t <\/em>her living room,<br \/>after all. Alex died years ago, and where his office<br \/>stood there\u2019s now a mall. Her rotary phone<br \/>is landfill, and as for the house &#8230; The house<br \/>is the source of this nightmare, with its tireless car<br \/>entombed in the old garage. And worse, this coffee<\/p>\n<p>stain on the bodice of her bridal gown, the coffee<br \/>grounds ground into the wall-to-wall living room<br \/>carpet, the mice squealing in the walls, and a car-<br \/>ving knife with a bone-white handle from the Office<br \/>of Lost Wives\u2014who could <em>live <\/em>in such a house?<br \/>It dawns on her she\u2019s dead. She lifts the phone<\/p>\n<p>from its cradle, and the silence of the telephone<br \/>confirms her fear. Ten thousand cups of coffee<br \/>ago she <em>was <\/em>Donna Stone, a fictional house-<br \/>wife and mother of two, alive in a living room,<br \/>full of wise saws and instances, one of life\u2019s best office<br \/>managers, licensed to marry and drive a car.<\/p>\n<p>Now she has nowhere to drive any car, no one to phone<br \/>but the office of \u201cPlease wait.\u201d The old brands of coffee<br \/>appear on TV, but in another living room, in someone else\u2019s house.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tom Disch\u2019s poem \u201cDonna Reed in the Old Scary House\u201d appeared in our Fall 1995 issue.
