We know the poem is called \u201cA Dream of Winter,\u201d and that it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-34616524\" target=\"_blank\">features eight verses of three lines and focuses on imagery of a birdless wood, snow, and \u2018singing statures.\u2019<\/a>\u00a0\u201d Anyone who can reconstruct it word for word based on these parameters will receive the entirety of my checking account.<\/li>\n<li>The novelist H. L. \u201cDoc\u201d Humes helped to cofound <em>The Paris Review<\/em> in the early fifties\u2014an often delicate enterprise, apparently. \u201cDoc\u2019s essential contribution to the founding of <em>The Paris Review<\/em> was his gusto and charisma; he was the first managing editor, but he prioritized his own writing \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/provost.upenn.edu\/initiatives\/arts\/stories\/2015\/10\/19\/doc-humes-and-the-paris-review-archive-a-literary-summer-at-the-morgan-library-museum\" target=\"_blank\">Doc was embarrassingly demoted to \u2018advertising manager\u2019 at the first issue\u2019s release in spring 1953<\/a>\u2014a slight that prompted him to stamp his name onto the masthead of as many copies of the first issue as he could. In future issues, Doc was restored to the masthead as a founding and contributing editor, in spite of his laissez-faire style.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in mourning through psychogeography: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/culture\/culture-desk\/the-ghosts-in-our-machines\" target=\"_blank\">When\u2019s the last time you\u2019ve spotted someone you know on Google Maps?<\/a> I never had. And my mother, besides, is no longer alive. It couldn\u2019t be her \u2026 By moving the camera position up and down the street, and using the zoom function, I could trace my mom\u2019s movements on that day as the Google car drove by. In the first frame, she\u2019s a few paces from the door, with her back to the street; she was probably just returning from work \u2026 I took screenshots of my mom from every angle available on the site, saved them to my hard drive, and e-mailed copies to myself, just in case my hard drive crashes at some point. Then, like a living, breathing grief-complicating clich\u00e9, I e-mailed the images to family and friends, in order to simultaneously brighten and ruin their days.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Jim Shaw is working a vein that you might call \u201ccrackpot gothic\u201d: his retrospective at the New Museum features his own work as well as the thrift-store paintings, UFO magazines, and wooden theatrical flats he\u2019s recovered from various ends of America. \u201cLike the surrealist Max Ernst, Shaw eschews a single signature style in favor of an elaborate, somewhat hermetic personal mythology \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/gallery\/2015\/oct\/25\/crackpot-gothic\/\" target=\"_blank\">Shaw\u2019s show may be titled \u2018The End Is Here,\u2019 but he appears to share our national optimism<\/a>. Although his obsessive faux na\u00efve work dares you to find it creepy, it is more often strangely cheerful, as well as enigmatic. How nice to see a swarm of gnat-sized Superman clones in pink capes fly through a giant keyhole.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Growing old blows. Art and literature know this\u2014in fact, they know it better than science, or at least better than dermatology. And so dermatologists, in their textbooks, turn to art: \u201cThe authors of <em>Surgical Anatomy of the Face<\/em> \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/thesmartset.com\/the-aging-face\/\" target=\"_blank\">conclude their efficient run-through of the changes that occur from approximately age thirty to seventy by referring their readers to a few seventeenth-century oil paintings<\/a>. \u2018These changes,\u2019 they note, \u2018can be clearly seen in the sequential self-portraits of Rembrandt.\u2019 And indeed, in the four that the authors have selected, we can trace the Dutch master\u2019s transformation from soft, luminescent youth to jowly, faded old man.
