Photograph by David Eulitt.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The cover story in this month\u2019s issue of <em>Harper\u2019s<\/em>: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.harpers.org\/archive\/2011\/01\">The Drunk&#8217;s Club<\/a>,\u201d by Clancy Martin.  An irreverent, harrowing, tough-minded account of Martin\u2019s experience in Alcoholics Anonymous, which he describes (characteristically) as \u201cthe cult that saved my life.\u201d \u2014<strong>Lorin Stein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve begun reading George Gissing\u2019s <em><a href=\" http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/New-Grub-Street-Penguin-Classics\/dp\/0140430326\">New Grub Street<\/a><\/em>, a late Victorian novel of the literary demimonde, which one of the characters calls \u201cthe valley of the shadow of books.\u201d It\u2019s a grim place: The editors are stupid, the writers are desperate, and everyone seems to live in a garret. A conflict is shaping up between the Pragmatist, who writes for money, and the Idealist, who writes for love. But Gissing was a Realist\u2014which means, I think, there will be no happy ending for Literature. \u2014<strong>Robyn Creswell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pick up the January issue of <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> with Johnny Depp on the cover. Look at all the beautiful people. Then turn to page sixty-four, and read about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/features\/2011\/01\/quaid-201101\">the delusional world of Randy and Evi Quaid<\/a>. The two are racked with debt and living out of a Prius in Canada. They are convinced they are being hunted by an anonymous group called \u201cthe Hollywood Star Whackers\u201d and that Randy\u2019s royalty checks are being funneled into an account under the name of \u201cRonda L. Quaid.\u201d Says Randy to the reporter: \u201cI guess I\u2019m worth more to \u2019em dead than alive.\u201d \u2014<strong>Thessaly La Force<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->There\u2019s something both terrifying and satisfying in the circular logic of recommending that one read a reading list. The list is Donald Barthelme\u2019s, and it comes attached to a lovely essay by Kevin Moffett, published in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.believermag.com\/issues\/200310\/?read=barthelme_syllabus\">The Believer<\/a><\/em> in 2003. Moffett recounts the summer he spent attacking the eighty-one suggestions\u2014which had once served as Barthelme\u2019s syllabus\u2014but there\u2019s no reason you can\u2019t make this a winter project of your own. \u2014<strong>Miranda Popkey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been admiring <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Novelists-Lexicon-Writers-Words-Define\/dp\/0231150806\">The Novelist\u2019s Lexicon<\/a><\/em>, a petite book edited by Villa Gillet filled with dozens and dozens of contributions from some of my favorite writers. The task? To pick one word that opens the door to their work. Rick Moody picks <em>adumbrated<\/em>, Etgar Keret chooses <em>balagan<\/em>, Jonathan Lethem selects <em>furniture<\/em>, Annie Proulx picks <em>terroir<\/em>, and\u2014perhaps my favorite\u2014Olivia Rosenthal settles on <em>no<\/em>. \u2014<strong>T. L.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p> I will plug Isak Dinesen from the afterlife. Don\u2019t think you\u2019re done just because you\u2019ve read <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Africa-Modern-Library-Isak-Dinesen\/dp\/0679600213\">Out of Africa<\/a><\/em>!
