Read her piece \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/letters-essays\/5447\/voices-from-chernobyl-svetlana-alexievich\" target=\"_blank\">Voices from Chernobyl<\/a>\u201d from our Winter 2004 issue. \u201cAlexievich,\u201d <em>The New York Times<\/em> writes, \u201cis best known for giving voice to women and men who had lived through World War II, the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan that lasted from 1979 to 1989, and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster of 1986.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/10\/lorin-stein-translating-submission.html\" target=\"_blank\">Our editor Lorin Stein discusses translating Michel Houellebecq\u2019s novel <em>Submission<\/em><\/a>\u2014specifically, one sentence about arousal, Muslims, and politics: \u201cAt first I wrote, \u2018Given the political situation, choosing a Muslim turned me on.\u2019 But this was very un-Houellebecqian \u2026 One of us came up with <em>arouse<\/em>: \u2018Arousing, in a way\u2019 \u2014 for me, that\u2019s how Houellebecq sounds. And even though the syntax doesn\u2019t track the French exactly, it preserves the air of anticlimax, the slight fussiness, the stoicism of the original. The sentence became less brutal, less vulgar.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When he\u2019s not making movies, Wim Wenders takes photographs\u2014and yes, most of these photos contain landscapes, and sure, most of them are devoid of human life, but don\u2019t call the guy a landscape photographer. He\u2019s got your number. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/10\/wim-wenders\" target=\"_blank\">I am not a landscape photographer<\/a>. I am interested in people. I am interested in our civilization. I am interested in what traces we leave in landscapes, in cities and places.\u00a0But I wait until people have gone, until they are out of the shot. So the place can start talking about us. Places are so much more able to evoke people when people are out. As soon as there is one person in the shot everybody looks at that person. If there is nobody in the shot, the beholder is able to listen to the story of that place. And that\u2019s my job. I try to make places tell their stories about us. So I am not a landscape photographer. I am really interested in people, but my way of finding out things about people is that I do photos about their absence, about their traces.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>When the Oregon Shakespeare Festival announced plans to translate all thirty-six plays into modern English, people got very pissed, very fast. These days we like our Shakespeare unadulterated; his genius, the thinking goes, reposes in his language. But it wasn\u2019t always so.<em> \u201c<\/em>So many serious Shakespeareans over the centuries have argued the opposite: that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/why-we-mostly-stopped-messing-with-shakespeares-language\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare\u2019s genius had to be salvaged from the obscure, indecorous, archaic, quibbling mess of his language<\/a>. For poets, playwrights, editors, and actors from the seventeenth century through much of the nineteenth, Shakespeare\u2019s language wasn\u2019t intoxicating so much as intoxicated: it needed a sobering intervention.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>North Korea just held its first photography exhibition curated by Western artists. Among the works on display were pictures by the Slovenian photographer Matja\u017e Tan\u010di\u010d, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ng-interactive\/2015\/oct\/07\/north-korea-3d-in-pictures\" target=\"_blank\">who took portraits of North Koreans in\u2014wait for it\u2014<em>3-D<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>And though that art form is liberating, his travels were not: \u201cMy guides would keep trying to trick me by taking me to the \u2018beautiful bits\u2019 like the pristine maternity hospital in Pyongyang, or a newly refurbished library. I\u2019d keep trying to trick them into letting me talk to ordinary North Koreans.\u201d Tan\u010di\u010d described the country as \u201clike a stage,\u201d and then, later, \u201clike a movie.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Belarussian writer Svetlana Alexievich has won this year\u2019s Nobel Prize for literature.
