\u201cThe most exciting thing is to read a poem out loud for the first time,\u201d Eileen Myles<\/strong> tells Ben Lerner<\/strong> in our new Fall issue<\/a>:<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a whole kind of inside thing bursting out, and I\u2019m always dying to hear it. I do hear it in my head, but I never read it out loud to myself until I\u2019m in front of people \u2026 What is so great\u2014I\u2019ll even say holy\u2014about reading a poem for the first time in front of people is that you\u2019re sharing what you felt in the moment of composition, when you were allowing <\/em>something. When I\u2019m writing the poem, I feel like I have to close my eyes. I don\u2019t mean literally, but you invite a kind of blindness and that\u2019s the birth of the poem. Writing is all performance. Something\u2019s passing through \u2026 The performance is us writing what\u2019s using us, remarking upon it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Tomorrow\u2014Wednesday, October 7\u2014Myles brings that spirit of performance to St. Marks Church, where she\u2019ll read<\/a> to celebrate the launch of\u00a0I Must Be Living Twice: New and Selected Poems 1975\u20132014<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and the reissue of her novel\u00a0Chelsea Girls<\/a><\/em>.
