He\u2019s just a beautiful stoner boy or an intellectual \u2026 We should let the writing world and its ways of distributing awards be part of fiction. <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/eileen-myles-in-conversation-with-ben-lerner\/\" target=\"_blank\">We should expose the very cultural apparatus that is affecting the reception of the book you\u2019re reading. What\u2019s dirty is that we\u2019re not supposed to talk about how it has sex and reproduces<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And if you\u2019ve been seeing Myles\u2019s name a lot lately, that\u2019s because she is, after nineteen books, getting some belated recognition, especially from younger readers, who envy the way \u201cshe seems to have gotten away with precisely the kind of New York life that doesn\u2019t seem possible anymore\u2014living cheaply, maintaining only glancing alliances with major academic institutions, and earning a living by making art pretty much the way she wants. \u2018It helps that I was queer, it helps that I grew up working class,\u2019 she says. \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vulture.com\/2015\/09\/after-19-books-eileen-myles-gets-her-due.html\" target=\"_blank\">I wasn\u2019t afraid of being poor. I didn\u2019t want to live in a big house. I\u2019m the perfect size for poetry. I can move around<\/a>.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1979, a puzzle book called <em>Masquerade<\/em>, by Kit Williams, landed on shelves in the UK. It went on to sell two million copies, and not because of good storytelling or any such hogwash\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/hazlitt.net\/feature\/goes-all-way-queen-puzzle-book-drove-england-madness\" target=\"_blank\">it promised to lead its most perceptive readers to buried treasure<\/a>. \u201cWithin <em>Masquerade<\/em>\u2019s covers were clues that pointed the way \u2026 an intricately worked golden hare, also made by Williams, in his typically perfect first attempt at goldsmithing. The prize was somewhere in England and the directions to find it encoded in the book, and that was all anyone knew \u2026 \u201d Not to get all clickbaity on you, but you\u2019ll <em>never believe <\/em>what they found!<\/li>\n<li>In a previously unpublished piece, Robert Walser imagines what the rules of seduction were in the days before heating, petroleum lamps, and railroads ruined the game: \u201cCalling someone up on the telephone did not, at the time, occur to anyone, and even the most dignified and important persons in all the land received no telegrams. Upon the seas\u2014this much he knew\u2014sailing ships circulated. India and America were somewhere or other. At the theater, Italian actors put on works that were sometimes operas, sometimes dramas or comedies\u2014he\u2019d only seen one so far. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/the-kiss-iii\/\" target=\"_blank\">He had no doubt already done a fair bit of kissing, for he was handsome, and the attractive have little difficulty initiating pleasant ensnarements<\/a>\u00a0\u2026 \u201d<\/li>\n<li>Yogi Berra (pour one out) was renowned and ridiculed for his malapropisms\u2014\u201cYou can observe a lot by watching,\u201d \u201cNobody goes there anymore, it\u2019s too crowded,\u201d and the like\u2014but let\u2019s not send this man into the next life without acknowledging the full scope of his verbal talents. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/prospero\/2015\/09\/johnson-quotables\" target=\"_blank\">Some of his best-known quotes go a long way to showing just how well language may be used<\/a> \u2026 And many of them are not mistakes at all.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our new issue features Ben Lerner interviewing Eileen Myles.
