But it can also serve as a gateway, for younger readers, to the pleasures of scholarship, by pointing to a larger universe of knowledge beyond.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And there\u2019s news, too, of annotation\u2019s sexy, scandalous cousin, citation. The venerable<em> Journal of Criminal Justice<\/em> decided to boost its \u201cimpact factor\u201d\u2014calculated by the average number of citations a journal receives\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Journal-That-Couldn-t\/233313\/?key=SD5zI15obncWYXAybmwWMzoDa3dsNx0nNSFKa38rblpdFQ==\" target=\"_blank\">by citing itself over and over and over again<\/a>. It\u2019s thus managed to be both number one in its field and widely suspected of malfeasance. \u201cIn the most eyebrow-raising instance, one four-paragraph editorial, published in 2014, didn\u2019t take up even a single page yet managed to have forty-seven citations, all to the <em>Journal of Criminal Justice<\/em>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>No one knows if Pynchon wrote the novel <em>Cow Country<\/em>, but people are pretty sure\u2014roughly 100 percent sure\u2014that he wrote this haunting 1966 essay on the aftermath of the Watts riots, which is, given its author\u2019s caginess and flights of fancy, exceptionally well reported: \u201cExcept for the use of the words \u2018Negro\u2019 and \u2018Caucasian,\u2019 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/21\/insider\/1966-pynchons-bleak-survey-of-race-relations.html\" target=\"_blank\"> Pynchon\u2019s essay reads as if it could have been written this past summer<\/a>, almost a half-century later. Its downbeat premise, delivered in the voice of a young disciple of Malcolm X, is no less contemporary.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In 1902, the French artist Albert Bergeret designed <em><a href=\"http:\/\/dangerousminds.net\/comments\/trading_cards_professions_for_women_of_the_future_imagined_in_1902\" target=\"_blank\">Women of the Future<\/a><\/em>, a series of trading cards depicting women at work in professions typically reserved for men: your doctor types, your lawyer types, your military-fencing master types. His feminist ambition is laudable; his insistence on skimpy outfits for the female generals and sergeants of the future, less so \u2026<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThis is all work by local artists and craftspeople \u2026 We have yoga classes on Wednesdays and Fridays. It\u2019s just a really great community space \u2026 All of our parenthetical duck bidets are ethically sourced in Nicaragua. The lettering on our storefront was painted with sea foam scraped lovingly from the back of a nursing beluga whale combined with a special dye extracted from Welsh nuns. Extracting dye from nuns is, contrary to popular belief, completely painless.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/food-drink\/2015\/09\/when-did-new-york-lose-its-sense-humour\" target=\"_blank\">The cynical, no-bullshit New Yorker has been replaced with the humorless, self-serious, astrology-obsessed post-hipster<\/a>, and now we all must
