The series took him a decade.<\/p>\n<p>In 1982, he contributed\u00a0these inspired illustrations to an adaptation of <em>Beowulf<\/em>\u00a0for ages nine and up. (You can see more of the drawings at <a href=\"http:\/\/book-graphics.blogspot.com\/2013\/10\/beowulf-illustrator-charles-keeping.html\">Book Graphics<\/a>.) If your nine-year-old can handle a bleary, ceaselessly gray world in which the sun is a soot-black blot and humans roam the earth in a miasma of hair and stink, have at it.\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As dismal as these drawings are, there\u2019s also a wry humor to them, and real sympathy\u2014especially for the enemy. You can see it here in Grendel\u2019s eyes, which look more scared than scary. As John Gardner did in <em>Grendel<\/em>, Keeping bestows humanity and dignity on him; you end up sort of rooting for him. (Spoiler: he is slain.)<\/p>\n<p>Keeping brought the same weird pathos\u00a0to his original work. In 1975, he wrote <em>Cockney Ding Dong<\/em>\u2014\u201chis most personal work,\u201d a biographer attests\u2014a collection of songs from his childhood. There\u2019s apparently a record of the songs, too, in which Keeping lends his own vocal talents to a number called \u201cThey\u2019re Moving Father&#8217;s Grave to Build a Sewer!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Exactly the man you want illustrating <em>Beowulf<\/em> for the kids.<\/p>\n<p><a
