Pedro Am\u00e9rico, <i>Hamlet\u2019s Vision<\/i>, 1893.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re like me, you spend most of your free time imagining what Hamlet might look like: the pallid cheeks, the heavy eyelids, the ruminating brow, the svelte silhouette, the dejected posture \u2026 But what if he was fat? What if the hero of the greatest tragedy of all time was a portly slob? His own mother believes he is\u2014\u201cHe\u2019s fat and scant of breath,\u201d she says to Claudius\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/theater\/2015\/09\/is_hamlet_fat_the_evidence_in_shakespeare_for_a_corpulent_prince_of_denmark.single.html\" target=\"_blank\">and an inspection of Shakespeare\u2019s <em>fat <\/em>usage<\/a> provides some troubling evidence.<\/li>\n<li>Women read more crime fiction than men, supposedly because they \u201csavor the victim role.\u201d But Vera Caspary, a midcentury crime novelist, did just the opposite: \u201cOn the page, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-secrets-of-vera-caspary-the-woman-who-wrote-laura\" target=\"_blank\">Caspary had almost supernatural powers of bemusement<\/a>; she turned her sorrows into triumphs. She liked to joke about her attractiveness to \u2018macaroni salesmen.\u2019 Her husband, whom she met when she was forty, was a movie producer, but she earned more than he did, and he resented it. She tried to ignore his resentment, and corrected people at parties who called her Mrs. Goldsmith.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>My grandfather\u2019s favorite place to walk was the mall, and in this he was not alone\u2014shopping centers are apparently \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2015\/09\/mall-stars\/406192\/?utm_source=SFTwitter\" target=\"_blank\">the second most popular venue for walking in the country, just behind neighborhoods<\/a>.\u201d Mall walkers, or Mall Stars, tend to be older, and they\u2019re admirably immune to the commercial aspects of the space, especially when they walk early in the morning: \u201cSince nothing\u2019s open you don\u2019t have to worry about what you\u2019re going to buy,\u201d one mall walker said. \u201cPlus, all the stores sell clothes for young people.\u201d The Mall of America boasts some 250 Mall Stars. There is something to live for.<\/li>\n<li>Fiction in England \u201cflourished for centuries before that of any of its neighbors\u201d; even so, one of its earliest practitioners, Geoffrey of Monmouth, couldn\u2019t bring himself to admit he was making shit up. His <em>History of the Kings of England <\/em>was full of invented royalty, but \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/sep\/22\/early-fiction-england-roots-literature-geoffrey-monmouth-chaucer-review?CMP=twt_books_b-gdnbooks\" target=\"_blank\">Geoffrey considered himself a historian<\/a>, and presented himself as such \u2026 Even at the time there were people who thought he was taking the mickey; one\u00a0commentator, Gerald of Wales, remarked that demons would flee when the gospels were read, but flock round to listen to Geoffrey\u2019s fibs (there was, for instance, no \u2018Emperor Leo\u2019). Nevertheless, his work was hugely popular, and more than two hundred manuscripts survive.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Now that the scandal surrounding Michael Derrick Hudson and Sherman Alexie has died down, let\u2019s revisit another ruse, from 2012: <a href=\"http:\/\/tedhashberryman.com\/2015\/09\/15\/best-american-hoaxery\/\" target=\"_blank\">that time when a guy said he was John Ashbery just because his e-mail address was johnashberypoetry@gmail.com<\/a>, and a prominent lit mag believed him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re like me, you spend most of your free time imagining what Hamlet might look like: the pallid cheeks, the heavy eyelids, the ruminating brow, the svelte silhouette, the dejected posture \u2026 But what if he was fat?
