Take some advice from a guy who\u2019s been around the block: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/122815\/cheat-its-only-way-get-published\" target=\"_blank\">during the submissions process, it\u2019s always better to lie and\/or cheat<\/a>. (The jury\u2019s still out on stealing.) \u201cI was a junior editor at an established magazine, and I decided to use this to my advantage. I typed up a cover letter on my employer\u2019s very fine letterhead, slipped it and the story into an envelope embossed with our well-known logo \u2026 A few months later, an editor emailed me at work\u2014stick it, SASE!\u2014to say he would like to buy the story \u2026 What I\u2019m counseling is cheating: You don\u2019t have to be an asshole. The submission process is a rigged casino game, though, and all is fair in love and literary magazines.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The trope of the writer as a habitu\u00e9 of caf\u00e9s\u2014always bowing his head over a cappuccino or espresso, always pausing to scrawl something brilliant and hard-won in a coffee-stained Moleskine notebook\u2014is irritating, both to the idea of writers and the idea of caf\u00e9s. <a href=\"https:\/\/lareviewofbooks.org\/essay\/writing-in-cafes-a-personal-history\" target=\"_blank\">The history of the coffeehouse<\/a> is a strange thing: it was long regarded not as a site for productivity but for procrastination, especially among men. \u201cCoffee itself was often thought to be disgusting\u2014a few of the names used by detractors were \u2018syrup of soot,\u2019 \u2018a foreign fart,\u2019 \u2018a sister of the common sewer,\u2019 \u2018resembling the river Styx,\u2019 \u2018Pluto\u2019s diet-drink,\u2019 \u2018horsepond liquor\u2019 \u2026 While the early coffeehouses sometimes hosted what were called \u2018improving activities,\u2019 including scientific lectures\u2014the scientist Robert Hooke, a member of the Royal Society, was a prominent coffeehouse lecturer, and in one particularly bizarre case, a porpoise was brought to a coffeehouse and dissected in front of an audience, in the name of natural philosophy\u2014the culture of \u2018improvement\u2019 did little to assuage the sense that these places were black holes for the productive days of men in their best working years.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Imagine befriending various writers. Did you know? Most of them will be awful companions, including Joyce, Dickens, Hardy, and even Lawrence: \u201cLater, when he takes the dog out he invites you to join him. He is looking for a man to form a <em>blutsbr\u00fcdershaft<\/em>, he says, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/imagined-meetings-with-joyce-dickens-hardy-and-lawrence\" target=\"_blank\">a friendship so strong that you can both say exactly what you think of each other without putting the relationship at risk<\/a>. As he says this, he places a hand on your wrist. He\u2019s so seductive that you feel afraid.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2015\/09\/15\/440397728\/mary-karr-on-writing-memoirs-no-doubt-ive-gotten-a-million-things-wrong?utm_campaign=storyshare&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_medium=social\" target=\"_blank\">Mary Karr sets the record straight<\/a> on a thing or two, as is her wont: \u201cDavid Foster Wallace wanted celebrity as much or more than any writer I\u2019ve ever known \u2026 I had to talk David out of doing a Gap commercial at one point because I said, \u2018Would Cormac McCarthy do it? Would Toni Morrison do it?\u2019\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in aged Lithuanian garage doors: \u201cLithuanian photographer Agne Gintalaite has documented <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2015\/09\/15\/agne_gintalaite_photographs_lithuania_s_soviet_era_garage_doors_in_beauty.html\" target=\"_blank\">a series of some 200 Lithuanian garage doors painted and weathered by the elements<\/a> and time on the outskirts of Vilnius that look like Mark Rothko paintings left out in the rain, each its own stunning work of abstract art.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hey, kid\u2014wanna get into print?
