Image via This Is Colossal<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>In which <a href=\"http:\/\/bombmagazine.org\/article\/922899\/craft-talk-nobody-asked-for\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Taylor dissects a paragraph of Sam Lipsyte\u2019s story \u201cThis Appointment Occurs in the Past,\u201d<\/a> in the name of pedagogy: \u201cThe only higher-order claims I wish to make today are, attention to language at the molecular level is valuable in itself; second, that anyone can learn it, in or out of the classroom; and third, that once it becomes assimilated as instinct it will enhance your writing as much as your reading, irrespective of whether you ever choose to write or read this way again.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Witness <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/entertainment\/archive\/2015\/09\/the-words-that-mean-their-opposites\/404815\/?utm_source=SFTwitter\" target=\"_blank\">the rise of the smarmonym<\/a>, a living reflection of our passive-aggressive use of language. What is it? Any word that we\u2019ve \u201cironized and de-meaninged and re-meaninged\u201d: \u201c<em>Pal<\/em>, which often connotes <em>enemy<\/em> \u2026 And <em>tolerance<\/em>\u2014which, when selected as a noun, often suggests its own absence. And <em>classy<\/em>. And <em>sincerely<\/em>, whose presence in a sentence is often evidence of, you know, total insincerity. <em>Honestly<\/em>, for the same reason. <em>Respectfully<\/em>, too. And, of course, <em>literally\u00a0<\/em>\u2026<\/li>\n<li>Today in interdisciplinary skirmishes: Simon Critchley remembers his teacher Frank Cioffi, whose philosophy had scientism in its crosshairs. \u201cHis concern was with the relation between the causal explanations offered by science and the kinds of humanistic description we find, say, in the novels of Dickens or Dostoevsky, or in the sociological writings of Erving Goffman and David Riesman. His quest was <a href=\"http:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/12\/there-is-no-theory-of-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\">to try and clarify the occasions when a scientific explanation was appropriate and when it was not, and we need instead a humanistic remark<\/a>. His conviction was that our confusions about science and the humanities had wide-ranging and malign societal consequences.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Paper is obsolete. Paper is wasteful and silly. And pages! Pages are ridiculous. The future of books is glass. Say it with me: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisiscolossal.com\/2015\/09\/ramon-todo-glass-books-and-stones\/\" target=\"_blank\">the future belongs to glass<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Garth Greenwell read Michael Nava\u2019s <em>The Little Death<\/em>, a mystery novel with a gay Latino hero from an immigrant family in California\u2019s Central Valley: \u201cHenry Rios is a defense attorney whose hardboiled bona fides\u2014world-weariness, wit, a penchant for erotic entanglement\u2014are accompanied by a hyper-attentiveness to class and a commitment to the poor. In a genre that had used queer people primarily as figures of ridicule and contempt, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/a-gay-mystery-novelist-who-chronicles-the-aftermath-of-aids\" target=\"_blank\">the Rios books offer a vista on gay lives extending from the closet-lined corridors of power to cruising parks and leather bars<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><em>The Paris Review<\/em> Parisians didn\u2019t fare too well this summer in New York Media Softball League. But you know who did? The <em>High Times<\/em>. They beat us. They beat pretty much everyone. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-09-09\/root-root-root-for-the-stoned-team\" target=\"_blank\">The Bonghitters remain an industry powerhouse<\/a>. They\u2019re the defending league champions \u2026 and they\u2019ve been blazing through opponents since forming in 1991 \u2026 For the Bonghitters, the first key to winning is showing up.\u201d The
