But a certain set of novels and films has made the era something to yearn for: \u201cThis was the last moment when a novelist or poet might withdraw a book that had already been accepted for publication and continue to fiddle with it for the next two or three years. This was the last time when a New York poet was reluctant to introduce to his arty friends someone who was a Hollywood film director, for fear the movies would be considered too low-status \u2026 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/09\/10\/t-magazine\/1970s-new-york-history.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">these works express a craving for the city that, while at its worst, was also more democratic<\/a> \u2026 where not even money could insulate you. They are a reaction to what feels like a safer, more burnished and efficient (but cornerless and predictable) city.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in writing advice that isn\u2019t total shit, even if it\u2019s about shit: \u201cI preach the radio. I do not preach thinking you must know what you are about. Faulkner had good drugs and a <em>big radio<\/em>. I recall having heard my own little radio at times. It is rare, yes, and it is, now, rarer. But you are young and have your juice, you\u2019re still full of poop, which is the necessary requisite to tuning the radio. Got to be some poop out there, on the airwaves, or in there, in you, for you to tune it in. Cherish the poop you are full of, and work on excreting it with sound fundamentals.\u201d That\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/in-which-padgett-powell-employs-an-extended-scatological-metaphor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Padgett Powell, being correct<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/v37\/n17\/robert-hanks\/on-putting-things-off\" target=\"_blank\">On procrastination and art<\/a>: might there be something heroic, or at least admirably resistant, in the idea of putting off one\u2019s writing? \u201cBartleby is my hero, endlessly preferring not to, but though I find him sympathetic, he\u2014along with all the \u2018writers of the no\u2019, writers who turned their backs on writing, Rimbaud and Walser among them\u2014is not in the same game as me. Or if we are in the same game, I\u2019m not playing it right. I don\u2019t turn my back on writing. I don\u2019t say no. I say yes and fail to follow through. I sit suspended between preferring not to and not preferring to enough\u2014I\u2019m hung on a peg.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Kenzaburo Oe\u2019s <em>A Personal Matter<\/em> is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/franzens-wsj-book-club-choice-a-personal-matter-1441835147\" target=\"_blank\">a compressed, unflinching portrait of the turmoil that envelops Bird, an alcoholic, after his son\u2019s birth<\/a>.\u201d The novel has a new champion: none but Jonathan Franzen, who adores its disturbing elements, its comic elements, its vomit elements: \u201cI don\u2019t know of a more compelling description of throwing up than the ones that occur in this book. He\u2019s sweating, he looks at himself in the mirror, and there\u2019s bad sex. It\u2019s partly that\u2014the really, really tight focus on Bird\u2019s body. There\u2019s nothing like a microscopic view of your body to evoke shame.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re on shame\u2014it\u2019s time for men to cry again. They have much to cry about, being men, and yet they shed no tears \u2026 why, when <a href=\"http:\/\/aeon.co\/magazine\/society\/is-there-anything-wrong-with-men-who-cry\/\" target=\"_blank\">male weeping has been treated as normal in almost every part of the world for most of recorded history<\/a>? In fact, it was exalted for a while: \u201cancient Greeks saw it as a model for how heroic\u00a0men should behave \u2026 20,000 knights swooning from grief were considered noble, not ridiculous \u2026 there\u2019s no mention of the men in these stories trying to restrain or hide their tears \u2026 They cry in a crowded hall with their heads held high. Nor do their companions make fun of this public blubbing; it\u2019s universally regarded as an admirable expression of feeling.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New York in the late seventies was not exactly a utopia: crime was soaring, graffiti was ubiquitous, mace was a must-have accessory.
