Macdonald, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/25\/books\/cynthia-macdonald-poet-known-for-humor-and-ability-to-shock-dies-at-87.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">who died earlier this month at eighty-seven<\/a>, taught for many years at the University of Houston; she was also a psychoanalyst. Richard Howard wrote that she drew her poems \u201cfrom the grotesque.\u201d \u201c<\/em>Grotesque <em>comes from the grotto,\u201d she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.phosphenepublishing.com\/subpage23.html\" target=\"_blank\">said in an interview<\/a>: \u201cthe grotto is, if you want, the hidden part of everybody \u2026 all writing comes from the grotto, whether it comes out as overtly odd or very conventional. So I would agree with that definition. I would say I am interested in strange things that happen, because they seem like a sharpened metaphor of what happens all the time.\u201d <br \/><\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wait in the Chair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Food for the fat is like air. It fills you up<br \/>and lifts you out of the chair whether otherwise<br \/>you sit like a dead seal.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But with pastry you soar.<br \/>The roar of ignition, the heavy ground recedes.<br \/>cares, sorrows sift out and float in air, just<br \/>another cloud\u2014whipped cream,<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 schlag\u2014it does not<br \/>tempt you, does not preempt the plans for the day,<br \/>those plans which, struck in your chair, you despaired<br \/>of effecting.<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The hopscotch, the basketball game,<br \/>the spring green park, animals walking<br \/>two by two never needing an ark, babies in prams,<br \/>all things bright and beautiful<br \/>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 until, against<br \/>your will, you need to eat again. The sky grows<br \/>dark. It starts to rain.
