I was reading poetry. How did Auden do his stanza forms? And I was trying to copy those. What\u2019s a successful poem, what\u2019s an unsuccessful poem? \u2026 What\u2019s a good sentence? I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve changed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/articles\/arts\/culturebox\/2015\/08\/james_wood_interview_the_new_yorker_writer_on_how_technology_is_changing.html\" target=\"_blank\">I am as sincerely interested in novels that fail as I am in novels that succeed. I just want to work them out<\/a>. It\u2019s a pleasure for me actually.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Who doesn\u2019t love a good moral panic? In today\u2019s advanced society, hardly a decade can pass without the populace whipping itself into a righteous lather over something or other\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/lithub.com\/moral-panic-and-the-myth-of-recovered-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\">the eighties\u2019 day-care abuse scandals stand as an especially potent reminder of our ability to delude ourselves, and the consequences of this delusion<\/a>. Richard Beck\u2019s <em>We Believe the Children<\/em> remembers the madness: \u201cJennifer went to regular one-on-one meetings with a therapist named Miriam, who also saw other children who had been allegedly abused at the day care. Miriam used dolls to demonstrate sex acts and then asked Jennifer to affirm that these things had happened to her. \u2018I remember getting massive headaches,\u2019 Jennifer said. \u2018And I remember Miriam saying, \u201cSay this happened to you, it did, it did\u201d\u2014repeatedly\u2014\u201cit did, didn\u2019t it?\u201d\u2019 Over and over again.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Japanese poet Sagawa Chika died, in 1936, before she\u2019d even turned twenty-five\u2014and before a long period of cultural upheaval in which her work quickly fell out of favor. \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/books\/page-turner\/the-startling-poetry-of-a-nearly-forgotten-japanese-modernist\" target=\"_blank\">But over the past decade, her work has enjoyed a revival among contemporary Japanese poets, and it has begun to appear in English<\/a> \u2026 Sagawa used free verse to explore her interiority through imagery: rather than relying on traditional forms, she expressed an individual relationship with the world and with nature \u2026 the body frequently becomes alien, distant, and threatening.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The Welsh poet R. S. Thomas, on the other hand, fled modernity in all its guises, embracing instead a thorough, religious misanthropy: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/comment\/personal-view\/11803911\/In-search-of-the-man-who-went-into-the-west.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\" target=\"_blank\">He despised modern consumer culture<\/a>\u2014talking of \u2018the machine\u2019 with its \u2018cold brain,\u2019 the yearning for the latest white goods to plug up the spiritual emptiness \u2026 He did not want to see an unspoilt spot carpeted in caravan parks and hated that the road to the saints on Bardsey had become \u2018a thoroughfare for ice-cream vendors.\u2019 He was enraged to bump into a \u2018creature in a bikini\u2019 on a birding trip.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/linguafranca\/2015\/08\/17\/from-a-to-z\/?cid=megamenu\" target=\"_blank\">Why did Jeff Bezos choose the name Amazon, anyway<\/a>, all those years ago? \u201cBezos\u2019s Amazon was not, it turns out, named for a woman warrior, but for the mighty river \u2026 Apparently Bezos didn\u2019t take his research that far, or even so far as to consider some relationship between the greatest river in the world and a mythical tribe of female fighters. He began, rather, with the name <em>Cadabra<\/em> \u2026 When his lawyer misheard the word as <em>Cadaver<\/em>, Bezos was prompted to change the name. He went for the river because of the implication of large scale and because website listings at the time were mostly alphabetical.
