Harold Bloom called it \u201ca poetic atrocity\u201d; Samuel Johnson refused to believe that Shakespeare was its author, writing that \u201cthe barbarity of the spectacles, and the general massacre, which are here exhibited, can scarcely be conceived tolerable to any audience \u2026 That Shakespeare wrote any part, though Theobald declares it <em>incontestable<\/em>, I see no reason for believing.\u201d In its five grisly acts, fourteen people die; at least one is raped; throats are cut; hands, tongues, and heads are cut off; blood spurts \u201cas from a conduit with three issuing spouts\u201d; bodies are thrown to beasts and into pits, dragged into forests, buried alive chest-deep and left to starve; the bones of two men are ground \u201cto powder small\u201d and baked, with heads, into pies, which are then fed to their mother.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s one of those tragedies that was just crying out for an illustrated edition. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Leonard Baskin answered the call in 1970, when his Gehenna Press launched a deluxe Shakespeare imprint, beginning with <em>Andronicus<\/em>. (The only other play they ended up publishing was <em>Othello<\/em>.) Baskin\u2014who died in 2000, and who illustrated everyone from Hart Crane to Marianne Moore to Melville to Euripides to Poe\u2014has the perfect style for the play\u2019s brutal, almost campy gore. \u201cHis line mocks and defeats death while outlining its image,\u201d the artist Rico Lebrun wrote in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/stream\/leonardbaskin00bowd#page\/n0\/mode\/2up\">Leonard Baskin<\/a><\/em>, a monograph. \u201cIt is a fact that malicious fate has taunted him shockingly, and that to this he has answered with style. Dour, forbidding, and entire, this style, while depicting terror, is not the prey of terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below are some of the highlights to his <em>Andronicus <\/em>etchings\u2014he made twenty-four in all. You can see more at the <a href=\"https:\/\/art.famsf.org\/leonard-baskin\">Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco<\/a>, which has a number of Baskin\u2019s works in their collection.<\/p>\n<p><div
