{"id":88555,"date":"2015-08-06T08:55:02","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T12:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/?p=88555"},"modified":"2015-08-06T14:11:50","modified_gmt":"2015-08-06T18:11:50","slug":"at-the-hundredth-universal-esperanto-congress-and-other-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/2015\/08\/06\/at-the-hundredth-universal-esperanto-congress-and-other-news\/","title":{"rendered":"At the Hundredth Universal Esperanto Congress, and Other News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_88557\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/esperanto2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88557\" class=\"wp-image-88557 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/esperanto2.jpg\" alt=\"esperanto2\" width=\"600\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/esperanto2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/esperanto2-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 62.5em) 67vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-88557\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the 1909 Esperanto Congress.<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1969, <em>Life\u00a0<\/em>ran a photo essay called \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3977614\/lady-author-advice-1960s\/\">What it takes to be a lady author anymore<\/a>,\u201d with predictably outmoded advice: \u201cswim a little,\u201d for starters, \u201cexercise in a bikini,\u201d and be \u201cphotographed in bed.\u201d The magazine photographed Jeanne Rejaunier\u2014who was promoting a new novel called, ironically enough, <em>The Beauty Trap<\/em>\u2014in various titillating poses, and also raking leaves in a Victorian dress. \u201cJust possibly because she smiles so prettily on the book jacket (the back <em>and<\/em> the front of the book),\u201d <em>Life\u00a0<\/em>wrote, \u201c<em>The Beauty Trap<\/em> is now in its fourth printing.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Today in obscure centennials: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lrb.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/08\/04\/harry-stopes\/at-the-universal-congress-of-esperanto\/\" target=\"_blank\">Last week the 100th Universal Congress of Esperanto was held in Lille<\/a>. The public program included a traditional dance workshop in the Place du Th\u00e9\u00e2tre, an ecumenical service in the Eglise Saint-Maurice and concerts by Esperanto singers. There were also introductory lessons in Esperanto, and an international football match between Esperanto and Western Sahara. (The match was abandoned at half-time with Western Sahara 4\u20130 up.)\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Rock music and fiction haven\u2019t blended terribly well over the years\u2014there\u2019s a <em>Great Jones Street <\/em>here, a <em>Goon Squad <\/em>there, and not much between. But 2014 saw no fewer than five entrants in the ongoing contest for Great American Rock Novel, and \u201cinterestingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/therumpus.net\/2015\/08\/rock-home\/\" target=\"_blank\">none of these 2014 titles concerns itself with conveying the over-the-top elements of rock on the page<\/a>. Rather, they focus on characters dabbling in rock within the larger context of their more domestic pursuits: growing up, falling in love, finding a path, having a family; in short, the arcs that have been part of the novel\u2019s scope since at least Austen. Much of the trouble for these characters comes when their more universal journeys collide with their need to make music, play in band, tour in an airbrushed bus.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/penguinrandomhouse.ca\/hazlitt\/feature\/page-four-dali-journal\" target=\"_blank\">Salvador Dal\u00ed\u2019s childhood diaries<\/a> remain untranslated, which is a shame, because they find him witnessing the unrest in the lead up to the Spanish Civil War: \u201cAt this point in the journal, the illustrations by Dal\u00ed \u2026 have become morbid. An old man hangs from a noose with his tongue lolling out. On the facing page, a warrior with sword in hand extends the severed head of a long-haired man toward the viewer.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>On <a href=\"http:\/\/electricliterature.com\/lit-as-last-bastion-natalka-sniadanko-on-suppression-solidarity-language-in-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\">the literary scene in Ukraine<\/a>, which has a strange emphasis on finality: \u201cUkrainian literature\u2014or Ukrainian culture more broadly\u2014employs the words <em>last<\/em> quite often: last territory, last bastion, the last issue of a magazine, the last books of a bankrupt publisher, the last Ukrainian-speaking readers, writers, translators. There is a well-known contemporary classic, a collection of essays by one of Ukraine\u2019s best-known authors, Yuri Andrukhovych, called <em>My Last Territory<\/em>; there is an art management agency
