It could very well be Anne, Emily, and Charlotte, couldn\u2019t it? And yet: \u201cThere\u2019s no record of them having their picture taken, photography wasn\u2019t exactly flourishing in Howarth in the 1840s, and it would have been expensive \u2026 Apart from anything else, it looks nothing like them. When Anne was four she told her father she wanted \u2018age and experience\u2019 but the women in the photograph are closer to middle age than the sisters would have been (Anne was twenty-eight when she died). They\u2019re too cross-looking, too.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>While we\u2019re talking tricks and illusions pertaining to Victorian-era writers\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/culture\/books\/11770469\/Jane-Austens-writing-used-by-computer-hackers-to-spread-viruses.html\" target=\"_blank\">hackers have taken to using passages from <em>Sense and Sensibility <\/em>to fool computers\u2019 security-screening processes<\/a>. (Computers are famous for adoring the prose of Jane Austen.*) \u201cAdding passages of classic text to an exploit kit landing page is a more effective obfuscation technique than the traditional approach of using random text,\u201d an important computer person said. \u201cAntivirus and other security solutions are more likely to categorize the web page as legitimate after \u2018reading\u2019 such text.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2015\/08\/the-grand-shattering\/?single=1\" target=\"_blank\">Sarah Manguso on being a mother and many other things<\/a>: \u201cA man who used to cuff and clamp me, and who once cut a hole in my tights with his coke razor and fucked me through it, became a close friend. One month I had an unusually heavy period. <em>I think I might actually be having a miscarriage<\/em>, I told him. <em>At least you aren\u2019t having a kid,<\/em> he replied, shuddering. We both laughed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Our London editor,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/blogs\/nyrblog\/2015\/jul\/28\/alan-pauls-history-of-money\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adam Thirlwell, on the Argentinean novelist Alan Pauls<\/a>: \u201cHis writing\u2014whose background is always the grotesqueries of recent Argentine politics\u2014is a constant process of evaluations, of readings and misreadings, as his characters try to investigate the true nature of the stories in which they find themselves \u2026 events are always hidden behind the scribble of the characters\u2019 thinking, a haze of suspended investigation into an infinitely receding past\u2014both personal, and also historical: the era of the Junta and the Dirty War.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Here at <em>The Paris Review<\/em>, we capitalize the word <em>Internet<\/em>, because our style guide says so: it\u2019s a proper noun. I have questioned the wisdom of this rule on more than one occasion, but I\u2019ve stood idly by and let it happen. Well, no more. The denizens of this World Wide Web, this information superhighway, this e-zone, must draw a line in the digital sand. \u201cWhether or not to capitalize the word <em>internet <\/em>might not seem like big fish to many readers, and they would be right \u2026 but neither is it simply a matter of correct grammar. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newrepublic.com\/article\/122384\/stop-capitalizing-word-internet?utm_content=buffer32348&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\">How we think about and make use of words can have a profound impact on how we think about the things those words represent<\/a> \u2026 changing the capitalization would signal a shift in understanding about what the internet actually is: \u2018part of the neural universe of life.\u2019 \u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><small>*This is a lie.<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today in pictures of the Bront\u00eb sisters that are probably actually not pictures of the Bront\u00eb sisters: have a look at this one from the mid-nineteenth century, recently purchased by a collector named Seamus Molloy on eBay for fifteen quid.
